Comments Thread For: Jermall Charlo on Facing Benavidez Jr.: 'It's Been A Long Road, Only The Strong Survive'

Jermall Charlo will end a 29-month layoff when he returns to the ring on Nov. 25 to take on Jose Benavidez Jr. Although Charlo is the WBC middleweight champion, the fight will be a 10-round non-title tilt and serve as the co-feature to the Showtime pay-per-view event headlined by super middleweights David Benavidez and Demetrius Andrade.

A non-title fight. Unless Charlo turns around real quick after this, there is a real possibility the WBC middleweight belt won't have been fought for for 3 years.

He had a bad performance after Jermell lost to Harrison. If he knocks out Jose who was at 140 or something a couple of years ago, does that throw David off vs. Andrade? Hope the best for Andrade since PBC has everything stacked against like Crawford.

I really hope that Jermall has it together and is able to salvage his career , but more importantly his life. He's always been cool with me even when I've seen him bad off. Best wishes Jermall.

"only the strong survive. I'm built different" That is such a weak and delusional Gen Z/Millennial thing to say, and both Charlos are poster boys for that. Thinking something is true just because they keep repeating it. Dude takes 3 years off for what -some depression, some wife problems. Whoopie doo. You know who was built different? Evander Holyfield. During his peak years, he dealt with 7 different baby mamas, his own mom (his hero) getting killed in a car wreck, his brother getting *******ned to death in a family fight and another brother going to jail for raping a kid. Instead of crying about it, he just went on to fight the best of the best and win 3 Heavyweight titles. Or how about Ali. Changing the world, stripped of his title, most famous dude on planet, (all the obligations and scrutiny that come with that)wife problems, money problems, tension with NOI, and all he did was also win the title 3x vs. The best. Or Sugar Ray Leonard, dude had coke and booze problems, PTSD from being ****d as a kid by his own coach, detached retina. Didn't stop him. Or even Money May, dude has family drama, goes to jail for beating his lady, had all sorts of kids, building a legit empire, and he just kept fighting and winning. THOSE guys are built different. Charlo built weak. Just like Jermell who had audacity to act hard and say Lions Only after that meek mentality vs. Canelo, giving himself participation trophy for going the distance. GTFOH

I don't know what to expect here, on paper Charlo should win easy and by stoppage but he has been out so long that he may only be a fraction of the fighter he was or maybe not have missed a beat.

Benavidez has at least been active and he seems to have a great deal of mental resolve. Given the factors involved its an interesting fights because Jose is good enough to capitalize off of a drastically diminished Charlo.

Whenever fighters or promoters try to justify these brazen mismatches, it sounds like an AI talking. Everything Charlo said there just doesn't sound like something a rationally thinking human would say. The premise is too ludicrous.

What was it, 3–5 years that the WBA cruiserweight title wasn't defended by Guillermo Jones? It's approaching that level of ridiculous.
