Jaime Munguia is being discussed as the next opponent for undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez to defend against in May 2024 on Showtime PPV.
The plan is for Canelo to defend against Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) in May and David Benavidez in September, with both fights taking place on Showtime pay-per-view.

Fans will be excited at seeing Canelo fight Benavidez next year, but they’ll be less eager to see him face Munguia, who has done nothing to earn this match-up.

If Canelo throws Munguia a bone by fighting him, he would be sending a message to promoters that if they match their fighters against weak opposition long enough, they’ll get a massive payday fight like Jaime.

It encourages promoters to keep pitting their fighters against poor opposition because they’ll be rewarded one of these days with a massive payday.

Canelo has two remaining fights on his three-fight contract with Premier Boxing Champions [PBC]. Although Showtime will no longer be broadcasting boxing events after 2023, they still have two fights that they’re contracted with Canelo in 2024 before they’re completely done.

Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout is reporting the plans for Canelo to potentially face Munguia & Benavidez next. Munguia has a fight planned against John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder in January that he needs to get out of the way before he can challenge Canelo for his undisputed 168-lb championship in May.

For Canelo to fight Munguia next May suggests that he doesn’t care what the boxing public thinks about him and that he’s not interested in giving people a good fight against Dmitry Bivol, Terence Crawford, David Benavidez, or David Morrell in that month.

Perhaps Canelo is saving Crawford, Bivol & Morrell for later. Hopefully, that’s the case because Canelo has had a lot of weak opposition lately with his fights against Jermell Charlo, John Ryder, and Gennadiy Golovkin.

People would like to see Canelo end that three-fight streak of weaker opponents and face someone good like Crawford, Bivol, Benavidez, or Morrell next May, but he wants to play it safe.

WBC interim super middleweight champion Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) has to win his fight next month against Demetrius Andrade (32-0, 19 KOs) on November 25th on Showtime PPV before he can face Canelo next year in September on the Mexican holiday weekend.

The plans for Canelo to fight Munguia & Benavidez in 2024 could go up in smoke if one or both fighters lose their next fights, which is entirely possible.

Munguia looked bad in his last fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko earlier this year, barely winning a 12 round unanimous decision after getting the stuffing beaten out of him by the past his best 37-year-old former world title challenger.

    LOL, fake news.

    1. No way Canelo is working with De la Hoya. 2. Showtime is closing up shop with boxing. 3. Funny how they want to mention Munguia as undeserving and never having fought anyone, then they want to throw Morrell's name out there. That's worse than Munguia.

      I don’t buy it…

It’ll be Jermall, which is honestly just as bad.

Canelo vs Mungia makes little sense. Canelo has a 3 fight contract with PBC. The last time I looked, Mungia was not a PBC fighter. I seriously doubt that PBC would consent to let Canelo fight a non-PBC fighter when he has Benavidez, Jermall Charlo, and Andrade waiting in the wings. Did the writer of this article check with Canelo's camp for verification?

But to Andrade’s point, Canelo is the only guy ever who avoided fighting someone in his own division and instead chose to fight someone 2 weight classes below him.
He did it when he fought Amir khan for the mw title while ggg was mandatory (then dropped his belt 2 weeks later to avoid ggg) and he just did it now with charlo, while Benavidez was clearly the best fight to make. Truly not the actions of someone who has boldly claimed to consistently be “chasing greatness”, someone who says “Mexican don’t fook around” or “this canelo beats anyone”.
This and everything Andrade said is 100 percent factual. Whether anybody likes the comments or not, Andrade is fighting the guy Canelo has been running from for 2 years.

Morell jr at least is the WBA #1 contender and he is a full fledged SMW. But as far as I know he hasn't call out ginger. What about Morrell Jr vs mungia? Winner face ginger.
ps. By the I think the writer is full of $h1t.

Yeah, I can at least agree with you on that one, Muguia fight is a farce if true.

              Canelo vs Benavidez/Andrade winner
              Morrell/MBilli

Winners fight in September. Pipe dream, but that's what I want.

UNLESS, it's Canelo vs Mungia or someone, with Benavidez (if he wins) on the undercard or a week later, with the concrete promise that they fight in September. Kinda like how De La Hoya/Hopkins got hyped up way back when.

I think the whole article has been paid by dlh to hype up his fighter.

That's a fact. He's also been ducking Andrade longer. One of these guys are gonna lose, unless it's a draw, maybe that's when he'll fight the loser. If Benavidez wins Canelo will not touch him, contrary to what his followers would like to think. He won't touch Morrell either, maybe Andrade now because he's older.

Too bad Andrade didn't get bigger fights sooner--but we will see what happens with Benavidez who is active and comes to fight.

Andrade was supposed to fight one of the Charlo's 10 years ago ,but he ducked out, so I don't think he has much of a leg to stand on.
