  • Comments Thread For: Martinez-Arroyo Rematch Permanently Canceled; Arroyo Relieved Of Interim WBC Title Reign

Time of death was finally called on the embarrassing Julio Cesar Martinez-McWilliams Arroyo saga. The title consolidation rematch will no longer move forward, nor will Arroyo any longer hold rights to challenge for the WBC flyweight title. The sanctioning body removed Arroyo's interim title status for failure to move forward with the ordered bout versus Mexico City's Martinez, who is now the sole WBC flyweight titleholder.

Despite all the statements made in regards to the constant cancellations of this fight, these guys gimme the feel that they were looking for a way to duck each other. Lol. They seemed to have scared each other off.

It's yet another argument against issuing "interim" titles. As if we don't have enough difficulty "unifying" separate organisations' belts, never mind consolidating ones from the same sanctioning body.

As crazy as that sounds, there is a real good possibility that it is what exactly happened in this particular situation.
They tasted each others power in the only fight that they had, both of them getting dropped, and realizing that one could lose to the other.
That said this was the correct decision to make, Arroyo shouldn't have held any kind of title without defending it for 2 years.
This fight lost it's luster a long time ago, and the permanent cancellation of this fight should've occurred about a year ago.

I agree with you 100% dan-b, these organizations are milking the fighters, and the system, with all of theses worthless titles.
It's incredibly difficult for the boxing fans to keep up with all of the bull**** going on in the sport of boxing. Stop this bull**** already!

They need to get rid of interim and Regular belt vs Super belt...4 is enough already, no need for more second tier belts

The little bit of a fight they had was entertaining I definitely wanted to see the rematch. To me it seems Arroyo is injury prone and he had been talking about retiring before anyways due to a back injury if I remember seeing correctly I don't think it was his brother.

You reiterated my exact thoughts. To know they might hafta deal with each other for 12 rounds or less with what they learned about each other in 2 rounds had them really second guessing themselves. Sucks for Arroyo bc he had more to gain, but at this stage, he is oft-injured and if I'm correct, was already talking about retiring anyway due to his injury history. Woulda loved see him become a champ to make history as the first set of twins from PR to win world titles.

I agree with you 100% Griever0730, I would've liked to have seen a fight between these two reach a definitive conclusion.
As reluctant as it appears that they were to taste their power again, I believe that once they would've been facing each other again, it would've been a fiercely fought battle's of will, pride, and ego.
To bad it just wasn't meant to be, Arroyo is going to retire if he hasn't stated so already, and Martinez is going to continue to defend his title.
