Trainer: "PAVLIK will be the easiest fight for Paul WILLIAMS"

Kelly Pavlik fight might be Paul Williams's easiest: trainer

    Wed Sep 30, 2009 9:10am EDT

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Reuters) - Paul Williams has won titles at welterweight and junior middleweight and now has his sights on Kelly Pavlik's middleweight titles in what his trainer said could be his easiest fight.

Pavlik defends his WBC and WBO middleweight crowns against the WBO's welterweight and interim junior middleweight champion in a Dec 5 clash in Atlantic City announced on Tuesday.

"I think this will be one of Paul's easiest fights," trainer George Peterson told reporters at a news conference held at the training facility of the NFL's New York Giants.

"He's just a basic fighter," the trainer said about Pavlik, whose 35-1 record includes 31 wins within the distance.

"Paul is the type of guy that will box and move. Pavlik comes straight in and tries to set up a jab and a right hand. Then he'll come back and try to set up a jab and a right hand.

"And he comes back and tries to set up a jab and a right hand. Does he know anything else?"

Pavlik, 27, who has not fought since February because of an injured knuckle on his left hand that got infected, is eager to get back into the ring for what he expects will be a slugfest.

"This is a fight where the last man standing wins," Pavlik said about the showdown with his fellow American.

Williams, a tall, 28-year-old southpaw with an aggressive style, has a 37-1 record and stopped 27 of his opponents.

"He comes from all different angles, comes to fight," Pavlik said. "My style is the same exact thing. When I put the gear on, it's time for war. There's no holding back."

Pavlik bounced back from losing a 12-round decision to Bernard Hopkins in a light-heavyweight tilt by stopping Marco Rubio in the ninth round of his second middleweight defense.

He said Williams has not yet felt a middleweight's power.

Peterson said his fighter was unconcerned.

"Paul is going to be hit, no doubt," the trainer said. "But Paul has a chin of granite."

Williams, who won a lopsided unanimous decision over twice junior middleweight champion Winky Wright in his last bout, was confident he could withstand Pavlik's firepower.

Williams has supreme athletic talent. Pavlik doesn't.

Kelly doesn't throw when he is being thrown at. And I don't know if he is going to get a break.

I can't believe that KP said that he throws from all angles. I always viewed him as the opposite.

not true pavlik does throw back its just hopkins mad him look bad lets not forget pavlik has wins over jermain taylor who even though he has been getting ****ted on recently still has a draw with winky(when he was winky) and 2 wins over b hop the guy who schooled pavlik . miranda i know he is limited but he hit hard and throws punches and he was destroyed (only beaten by pavlik and abraham 2 elite guys) lets not forget these wins just because hopkins a guy who has made tarver trinidad and other elite fighters look very bad did the same to pavlik

Williams has no defense. People talk as if Paul is going to box circles around Pavlik, when in reality, Paul comes straight forward as much as Pavlik. Hopkins was an in and out fighter, which gave Pavlik no chance of setting up a shot. Williams hasn't faught a fighter worth calling "a powerful puncher". You're going to need more than a suspect chin against the likes of Pavlik. The thing about Pavlik is that, yes, he's a basic fighter, but he's very very consistant. No fighter would have a record of 35-1 with 31 ko's if all he had were the basics and nothing else spectacular. People are undermining Pavlik because the Hopkins loss because EVERYONE was on the Pavlik hype-train for that fight, so it left many disapointed. But I **** you not, Hopkins and Williams are nothing alike. Williams takes alot of shots from his opponent and likes to trade punches, while willing has no defense. Pavlik will trade punches with you and you will lose. Pavlik has taken much much much harder shots from other fighters, you can't rely on Paul getting a TKO. And the fact Pavlik was able to box and WIN against Taylor in the second fight is a great feat also that people tend to undermine also.

I agree with many of the complimentary things you have said about Kelly. Pavlik deserves props.

But I always felt that KP was somewhat limited, and he gets by on being so big and tall with the heavy right hand. My preference is stylish fighters, and KP is more robotic.

I don't like KP's image, and the image of his corner. As such, I'm hoping for - and expecting - a Williams win. It would make it especially sweet for me that a WW beats him.

Also, I think Kelz may be diminished by his personal demons (alcohol?) and that may show up in the fight. We'll just have to see on that.

Williams & his trainer believe in the Williams hype. Go figure.
Still a pretty dumb thing to say given this is clearly the toughest test of his career.
