EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Reuters) - Paul Williams has won titles at welterweight and junior middleweight and now has his sights on Kelly Pavlik's middleweight titles in what his trainer said could be his easiest fight.
Pavlik defends his WBC and WBO middleweight crowns against the WBO's welterweight and interim junior middleweight champion in a Dec 5 clash in Atlantic City announced on Tuesday.
"I think this will be one of Paul's easiest fights," trainer George Peterson told reporters at a news conference held at the training facility of the NFL's New York Giants.
"He's just a basic fighter," the trainer said about Pavlik, whose 35-1 record includes 31 wins within the distance.
"Paul is the type of guy that will box and move. Pavlik comes straight in and tries to set up a jab and a right hand. Then he'll come back and try to set up a jab and a right hand.
"And he comes back and tries to set up a jab and a right hand. Does he know anything else?"
Pavlik, 27, who has not fought since February because of an injured knuckle on his left hand that got infected, is eager to get back into the ring for what he expects will be a slugfest.
"This is a fight where the last man standing wins," Pavlik said about the showdown with his fellow American.
Williams, a tall, 28-year-old southpaw with an aggressive style, has a 37-1 record and stopped 27 of his opponents.
"He comes from all different angles, comes to fight," Pavlik said. "My style is the same exact thing. When I put the gear on, it's time for war. There's no holding back."
Pavlik bounced back from losing a 12-round decision to Bernard Hopkins in a light-heavyweight tilt by stopping Marco Rubio in the ninth round of his second middleweight defense.
He said Williams has not yet felt a middleweight's power.
Peterson said his fighter was unconcerned.
"Paul is going to be hit, no doubt," the trainer said. "But Paul has a chin of granite."
Williams, who won a lopsided unanimous decision over twice junior middleweight champion Winky Wright in his last bout, was confident he could withstand Pavlik's firepower.
