Klitschko/Arreola = Highest rated HBO fight in 09

HBO had back-to-back hits with Mayweather-Marquez and Klitschko-Arreola.

The network reported that the Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez fight on Sept. 19 did 1 million pay-per-view buys. A week later, Vitali Klitschko-Chris Arreola was the highest-rated fight of the year on HBO World Championship Boxing, according to a news release from Klitschko’s promotional firm.

Klitschko-Arreola did better than Shane Mosley-Antonio Margarito and Marquez-Juan Diaz, according to the release.

Mayweather easily outpointed Marquez in Las Vegas. Klitschko stopped Arreola after 10 rounds in Los Angeles.

“This shows that the boxing fans were craving a great heavyweight matchup and eagerly awaiting Vitali’s return to HBO,” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions.

Klitschko had last fought on HBO in 2003, when he stopped Kirk Johnson.

The Klitschko-Arreola fight also did well in Germany, where the Klitschko brothers have a large following. The news release said it received a 52-percent share of the market, “the highest rated program at that time slot,” said Bernd Boente of Klitschko Management Group.

I thought most Americans thought Klitschkos were boring and the heavyweight division ****t?

You can't act like the replay of May/JMM didn't help that tremendously. Because it did.

Most people probably watched May Vs JMM then about the first 5 rounds of the VK fight and walked off.

The fight was broadcasted on Sunday morning at 5am, for free, in Germany. That is a rather bad time to get broad attention. Getting 52% market share at that time is not difficult, since only the fanboys and the party animals on the way to bed are watching then.

I still was happy to set an alarm clock for the fight, 'cause it was worth it.
