How about making boxers accountable for taking long layoffs?

It's a win win situation for Wilder. He loses, blame it on the layoff. He wins, no mention of the long layoff. In theory, he's supposed to be at a disadvantage because AJ is more active. Blame the layoff on some ghost or something. So what's the assessment here between Joshua and Wilder? AJ chose to be active by taking 2 interim fights while Wilder would be in his 1 year layoff by the time he fights Joshua. Is AJ supposed to be at an advantage because he chose to be active? Or Wilder has more advantage because he's well rested and didn't take any form of stress-inducing activities like training for fights, sparring sessions, stay-busy fights themselves, etc.

The buck always stops with the fighter.
Excuses don't reallllllllly matter tho. You win or you lose. "Boxing" doesn't care why you lost. Fans care sure, but it don't reallllllllly matter. The goal is to win. Not to lose or lose with the best reason why you lost. Not fighting for over a year probably does hurt your chances to win, but thats the situation a fighter might be in going into a big fight.
And there's ALWAYS something going on in someone's life. Guys go into fights with all kinds of sh^t & they win all the time. If you can win with sh^t going on then who gaf if you lose with sh^t going on. The fighter who says they woulda won IF x, y or z happened are either bsing or misplanned their situation or taking a fight at all I'd argue more than it matters to anyone except to them & their most loyal fanboys of course.

Not if there is no date or money for a fight it doesn't. This ain't the old days. Its a different era. There's x platforms to work on. There's x dates on those platforms. There's x money available from those platforms. There's x value a fighter has. If all those x's don't line up right you ain't getting a fight date.
If SRL & Hagler were around today they'd be in the same boat with fighting less often. And if Boots & Tank were around in the 80's they'd probably be more active. Different times.
Again for anyone who doubts me go look at all the top ten guys from 105 to HW. The WHOLE SPORT on avg is fighting about every 8mos. This isn't a personal decision EVERY boxer made on their own. This is bigger than that.Comment

Too many fighters in one PBC house. Not enough money to provide 2 fights a year for their fighters. They'd rather spend money on Canelo. But there are others that genuinely avoid fights even when they're available. Guys like Jermall Charlo, Wilder, etc.Comment

It’s like a fashion fad , it goes sky high and then it just dips
All the kids were wearing Converse , then it wasn’t the fad anymore and off to the next one , Puma
All this chit started when Floyd began his journey of preserving his 0
What fighters don’t understand is he could afford it , his fights were bringing in mucho denaro , it was considered a week long event , just like when Gatti fought in Atlantic City , everything doubled or tripled whether it be bars , restaurants or hotels
Take for example Boo Boo whos wasting away his fughin career waiting for that big payout
Haymon is and I always said a fughin cancer to the sport of boxingComment

Top Fighters are what only relevant for what 10 years if they are lucky ?! And many of the top guys only fight once a year, madness, surely you've got to make hay while you're body lets you. Bivol for instance, feck, man should of been building his brand up after Canelo, zurdo, even if he's not fighting top guys, activity is still a good thing.Comment

"Jermell Charlo doesn't think ring rust exists; Says fighters use it as excuse for performances."Fans just love babying their fighters. I'd bet any fighter would brush aside the layoff excuse for poor performance because in the back of his mind he trained like a horse and made sure all boxes have been ticked.
Take it straight from the horse's mouth:
Jermell Charlo Doesn't Think Ring Rust Exists;
Says Fighters Use It As Excuse For Performances

This is probably the more useful way to approach this thread, instead of who's doing it or not. So if what Charlo is saying is true, why do fans continue to use it as an excuse when the guy in question performed not up to par in his fight?Comment
