Of course banning father and son duos is ridiculous, but the vitriol of the responses here is disproportionate to the statement. People (here) seem personally offended by his comments.
For my part, it's that he is very given to extreme statements, and his commentary almost always boils down to some variation on: "it's a chess match", "he needs to establish the jab," and "he's got to go to the body" followed by one of the following justifications: "Going to the body will open up the head shot that he's looking for"/"when you got those slick movers, you have to hit them to the body to slow them feet down"/"some guys you can't stop to the head, so you have to go to the body."
It's not that it's bad or wrong advice, it's that he very rarely says anything else. I could probably spend about 15 minutes collating stuff from various fights and string it together more or less at random and essentially duplicate his fight commentary for any given fight. In his defense, I could say the same about Sergio Mora, but it is still a far cry from other commentators who don't suck at their jobs.
Being good at boxing doesn't mean that you are good at commentary. He's interrupted his fellow commentators before to say three different variations on the exact same thing. Add to that the likelihood that he's going to make some statement that's extreme and inflammatory, and therefore has a high probability of being wrong, and his willingness to bring personal beefs into his work, and you have a high likelihood of getting quite a bit of vitriol.
If he doesn't like it (and I suspect he probably does, because he likes the attention), he needs to act more like a professional and keep the BS to a minimum. There's no benefit to his argument in acting like a Teofimo Lopez himself. He could just say "Teo and his dad say all kinds of ****** things and that type of behavior is toxic and not good for boxing" and most everyone would be like "yeah, Tim, those guys are dopes." But instead he chooses to make statements like this. If you're going to play ****** games, it stands to reason that you get ****** prizes.
Kenny porter is a one of a kind, REAL DEAL father that values his son's more than boxing or money. If you were a father you'd get it..
I’m a father and maybe you don’t get it. The accolades you shower on Kenny Porter are hardly true. The other poster had it right, Kenny is a self centered ego maniac. Depriving your son of a chance to win a big fight when he’s not hurt but because he did train like his father wanted.
I mean you have a great ones like Joe calzaghe and his dad that was a Brilliant partnership but yeah sometimes it breaks down but I don't see what banning it is good for really.
Rewatch the fight and listen to what Kenny Porter told Shawn and to what he said afterward. Kenny admits that he stopped the fight because Shawn didn't prepare the way he wanted him to and wasn't executing in the ring, not because Shawn was out on his feet. Kenny Porter didn't save his son from harm. He saved is own ego (he fancies himself a master trainer) from further damage and punished his son in the process. Kenny is a megalomaniac who thinks his son orbits around him instead of the other way around. Thankfully he has a loyal, dutiful son who forgives him for his arrogrance and disrespect.
I think Shawn was gonna get stopped in that fight but Kenny stopping it like he did was not good that was just a ego thing for him there
He just threw a blanket statement without giving it too much thought.
No, that's what you did.
Tim Bradley spent his career in boxing, in the gyms seeing this dynamic, covers fights and interacts with fighter-son teams personally in his job, was part of a father-son combo himself.
Tim Bradley DOES know what he's talking about. I'm absolutely HILARIOUS you would actually state otherwise.

To say that it should be banned is simply ridiculous. I never said that it always works out. Different people do different things and to say what he said is short sighted.
This nonsense is the direct result of Arum robbing Pacquiao in the first Bradley fight because he thought Pac would leave him to make the Floyd fight happen.
