Thanks for the link TS. Awesome read and IMO spot on. I think Thomas Hauser is one of the best in the business.

The alliance between GBP and HBO is the #1 problem with boxing today and needs to be fixed before it can effectively move forward. There needs to be an independent and unbiased ranking systems compiled by voting 1-10 in each weight class by a selected boxing writers, hall of famers, top promoters and top managers. I understand that promoters and manager would still be inclined to vote for their own at #1 but those votes would be cancelled out by their competition. What matters is who they vote 2-10 on the weighted scale. Because 2nd place would garner 9 points towards the final tally. If you had 100 people filling out votes you would surely get an unblemished ranking.

Then once those rankings are compiled HBO, Showtime and even ESPN start pitting the sports best against it's best regardless of who the promoter is. The champion or the highest ranking fighter will always command a 60/40 split and their promoter would get the site selection.

I love Hauser. His work on HBO in recent years has been fantastic and deadly accurate. THIS is what a journalist is supposed to do, not nuthug their fave fighter. Powerful words here:

Forget about champions. The world sanctioning organizations have made a mockery of the term. And forget about the Ring Magazine belts. The Ring is owned by a promoter. And even if it operates in good faith, its championship-belt rules don’t work in today’s world. That’s evident from the number of Ring titles that are currently “vacant” and the fact that Carlos Baldomir was Ring’s welterweight “champion” in 2006 despite the fact that there were a half-dozen welterweights who were better than he was.

I agree. It had to be said and I applaud Hauser for saying it. Now us, as fans, must get vocal and demand it!

Exactly - THIS is what a journalist is supposed to do. Not serve as PR for their favorite fighters, not serve as a mindless mouthpiece for promoters, not just act as a middleman to relay what he said / she said after a press conference. ANY decent writer can repeat what he's told.

It takes a good journalist to really tell a story from beginning to end, focusing on issues that affect the population (in this case, fight fans) as a whole. Often that means not being afraid to put powerful people and en****** in the crosshairs, taking them to task. Hauser did so with HBO, but did so fairly without going overboard IMO.

                  Haha, good luck.

Unfortunately most of the posters on this site probably aren't smart enough to know they should care about this.

They'd rather spend their time running their mouths about the same old "so and so is a washed up bum," or "all fighters from x country are overrated hypejobs," instead of shutting up and learning something for a change.
