Comments Thread For: Benavidez Sr: Give Canelo What He Wants, We Want The Opportunity - Not The 'Payday'

Jose Benavidez Sr, father and trainer of two-time super middleweight champion David Benavidez, says their motivation is not fueled by money but the opportunity to get in the ring with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

This guy. Canelo already has everything. What Benenvidez offers him is the biggest fight out there but it's also down to Benenvidez to make it as big as it can be. That's what Canelo really wants. It can be bigger than it is now. So go beat Andrade or Morrell or Charlo if they are still boxing and have the biggest fight next year. Canelo may need to beat Bivol too of course.....

"I think he is the best and when you are at that level you have to fight anyone," Benavidez Sr. said. "When you're a champion, you fight anyone, that's what makes a champion."

Also, champions don’t lose their belt by not making weight or going on coke binges.

Based upon the eye test Morrell jr looks to be the best at 168 and a fight anyone should avoid if they're focused on a Canelo payday. Benavidez should go fight Andrade get their name up. Canelo Charlo for Canelo not risking it. While Morrell jr should fight plant as a co main event

He (Canelo) just wants Bivol @ 175! Interesting thing is that it seems Bivol ONLY wants the fight at 168! Initially, I thought Hearn was trying to convince Bivol to go to 168, but that no longer seems to be the case:

Bivol’s Manager Kornilov Says Canelo “Doesn’t Want A Rematch” – Says Bivol’s Target Is Now Beterbiev
            06/03/2023 - By James Slater

It seems there is some very real doubt we will see a return fight between Dmitry Bivol and Canelo Alvarez. As fans know, the unbeaten Russian defeated Canelo via wide (it should have been wider) decision in May of last year, this when the Mexican star made his second foray into the 175 pound division. Almost as soon as he had been beaten, Canelo made it clear he wanted to fight Bivol again.

But now it seems the two sides are at loggerheads over what weight a return fight should be fought at. Vadim Kornilov, Bivol’s manager, spoke with ESPN Knockout, and he said the terms Canelo wants for the rematch, which is to have the fight under the same terms as fight-one, are unacceptable.

Canelo says he wants the rematch at 175, Bivol says he has already beaten Canelo at the weight and that he wants a different challenge, with him wanting to try and win Canelo’s super-middleweight belts.

“They don’t want a rematch,” Kornilov said of Team-Canelo. “They know that they lost very badly in the first fight and that they have less chances of winning in the second. When have you heard of a fighter who, after losing, asked for a rematch on the same terms? In my opinion I think they don’t want a rematch and they are saying that to justify themselves and make another fight like they did with [Gennady] Golovkin, John Ryder and maybe [Edgar] Berlanga. A rematch cannot take place on the same terms as the fight you lost. It’s ******. We are looking forward. Artur Beterbiev is our target.”

            https://www.boxing247.com/boxing-new...terbiev/263894

I'm not sure what Kornilov is talking about? MOST rematches are at the same weight as the fiirst fight. Rarely does the winner, from the higher weight class, ask for the rematch to be at a lower weight! I commend Bivol for wanting to fight Canelo @ 168, but if Canelo doesn't want Bivol @ 168, THEN PLEASE FIGHT DAVID BENAVIDEZ!!!

Canelo has 0 reason not to face Benavidez at this point. Bivol isn’t interested in beating someone he already dominated for chump change and no titles. Benavidez is willing to take little money while Canelo gets big money, a fight with Benavidez will do the best Ppv numbers, the story makes sense since Canelo is walking around with a title that Benavidez never lost in the ring, and the Mexican vs Mexican American angle will do good business. If canelo can’t land Bivol (which looks to be the case) this is literally the ONLY fight that makes sense. I’m fairly sure Hearn has run out of Brit level fighters to feed to Canelo so not sure where else he turns. B

We already know Canelo is trying to rob Bivol. That's the only reason he wants to get him back in the ring. He can't win the fight legitimately so he does what he does best, cheat somehow. And no way he fights at 168 because when he loses he has no belts and Bivol has all of them. Honestly instead of this next John Ryder level **** fight he should just retire. He's not willing to fight Beterbiev or Benavidez. His one goal is to somehow beat Bivol whatever means necessary.

Canelo won't take that fight even for a 10/90 split. He's into handpicking his opponents these days.

If Canelo was a honorable man and a proud Mexican, he would give Benevidez his shot. He made his money, he will retire soon, and he should pass the torch to a young and talented countryman. But he won't, because he isn't.
