Roy Jones Jr: "I Beat Bernard Hopkins With One Hand"
Collapse
-
Roy Jones Jr. is not worried about fighting Bernard Hopkins in the first quarter of 2010. Jones won a decision over Hopkins in 1993 for the vacant IBF middleweight title. Last week he signed an agreement to fight Hopkins in a rematch 16-years in the making. He says beating Hopkins is nothing new, he beat him in 1993 with one hand. Jones has always claimed that he beat Hopkins with a hand injury. The only concern for Jones is the IBO cruiserweight title bout against champion Danny Green on December 2 in Sydney, Australia. [details]
An old Calzaghe still schools Roy anyday!!!Comment

I love this whole "beat him with one hand" **** that Roy spouts all the time about the Bernard fight.
Anybody who's even watched it saw Jones throwing the right hand as well as the left on multiple occasions.
Not as frequently as normal, so it was "limited" for Roy.
But it's still not "beating him with one hand", either.
Keep talking Roy ; January is on the horizon....
Is B Hop going to back Roy up and pressure him? Is he going to fight in the middle of the ring, outbox him and try to match Roys hand speed? Is he going to Bully the bigger Jones?
B Hops last KO was was in 2004 vs the smaller Oscar De La Hoya (who was just beat up by Felix Sturm) with a body shot so I dont see him KO'ing RJJ. And before that 2002 vs Carl Daniels ( and his corner stopped the fight so it was a TKO)...B Hop doesnt have KO Power.Last edited by Jiddu Dali; 10-02-2009, 02:05 AM.Comment

I think B Hop has more to worry about fighting RJJ than RJJ has to worry about fighting B Hop.

Let's face it ; Hopkins' defensive style (while highly entertaining to myself and several others) isn't exactly a crowd pleaser, and usually the man has to utterly dominate on the cards in order for his fights to not be closer than they should on the cards.
But Jones is gunshy as all hell these days. Sure he can light up a Jeff Lacy or an Omar Sheika whenever he wants, but against an Elite opponet he's shown a serious drop off in activity ever since the KO losses.
I basically see this fight being a mere shell of what it would've been had it happened 8 years ago when it was supposed to. Hopkins was much more aggressive then (and sans the thyroid condition) and Jones was prime and sharp as hell.
Back then it would've been amazing.
Now I see it being boring, with some entertaining moments sprinkled here and there throughout the fight.
Most likely a close SD in favor of whoever does more fighting.Last edited by ßringer; 10-02-2009, 02:35 AM.Comment

I think the whole "whoever gets a KO gets 60-40" isn't really part of the contract. I think it's all a way to help promote the fight. They know that they are two old men trying to sell a PPV, and they are pitching the whole KO thing to make people think they will go to war and try to get the KO, when really they will just do what they can. With that said, it should be a good fight. I hope the loser retires.
It's all promotion.
Hopkins isn't active enough or powerful enough these days to stop Roy.
And Bernard never gets caught often enough, or flush enough, for Roy to stop him.
This fight has "12 round decision" written all over it.
I agree with the loser retiring, as well. But I honestly think they should both just call it a day.
That said ; I'll also be extremely sad to see them both hang them up. They were the two active fighters that got me into this sport back in '95, Hopkins especially, but Jones played a role as well.
It's always ****ty when you have to say goodbye to a favorite.Comment

Stylistically, Roy SHOULD win this. I know all the details of both fighters AND their ages so don't jump on me for saying that. I just feel that Roy can work Hop for 12 rounds better than Hop can work Roy for 12. When it comes down to the scorecards, Roy will have worked at a higher rate, been more offensive, etc. Regardless of how it LOOKS, which I suspect it will be nothing short of a disappointment for true fans of either, Roy will be more active and land more effectively = UD/SD.Comment

A lot of people saying that Hopkins does not have KO power.
Cough.
Hopkins fighting preference is to beat up his opponents. Bully them for twelve rounds. Take them to school, etc.
I remember after the Pavlik fight, Hopkins said he is looking to knock out opponents.
It's rare that he states that he is going to KO an opponent, I believe come fight night we're going to see a different Hopkins, a more animate Hopkins, and a Hopkins that will close Roy Jones career in style.Comment
