  • Comments Thread For: Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko - Lost Time

By Cliff Rold - The road to big fights in boxing is often colorful. The road to the battle for the lightweight championship this Saturday (ESPN PPV, 10 PM EST) is one with a little bit of Robert Frost to it. Two roads diverged around 2019. Will that make all the difference this weekend? We know the road traveled so far.

Haney deserves to lose. Has no pop and was hugging Linares like Winnie the Pooh. I can already see the shock and hurt on Haneys face when he can’t just hug and jab Loma all night long. Cannot wait. We might see some Wilder level excuses after this fight.

The size difference between them is surprising. Props to Loma for taking on a visibly bigger opponent. It’s not as big a delta as Pacquiao vs Margarito, but still clearly visible.

A really good fight which seems to shape up as a chess match.

The big question is if Loma can overcome the size and height and reach advantages that Haney has.

There's no bad blood between the two, hardly any hype really, but it's a better matchup than Tank vs Ryan. It's just that the latter two have such a bigger profile and have been marketed in a better way.

Haney has the size/reach/age advantage, Loma has better technical skills (IMO). I am predicting a good scrap regardless of who wins.

Thought it was interesting Haney saying Loma was 'training to hit on the break' and suggesting he has a history of doing that and it makes him a dirty fighter. Loma has clearly trained to clinch-break and position to attack once he frees his arms, but absent a clear 'break' command from the ref, I'm not understanding Haney's point as that's part of boxing. It suggests the ref calls 'break' and Loma then hits on the way out. Also kind of suggests 'Í'm going to be clinching a lot and want a clear break command from the ref every time I tie up'. Hopefully the ref has a good night and calls holding if the hug is too tight for Loma to break out of (and deducts if persistent), else calls for them to fight out the clinch (which indeed Loma has trained for as he's good at it).
