  • Comments Thread For: Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela Drops, Edges Steve Spark With Split Decision in Fire-Fight

Steve Spark's resilience served him well Saturday night, but it wasn't enough to beat Gabriel Gollaz near Gollaz's hometown. The tough Australian junior welterweight withstood Gollaz's onslaught and a knockdown in the sixth round and appeared to regain control of their entertaining 10-round fight, yet he lost a split decision on the Canelo Alvarez-John Ryder undercard at Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico. Judges Ruben Cruz (96-93) and Erika Contreras (95-94) scored their fight for Guadalajara's Gollaz, who lost 95-94 according to judge Jeremy Hayes.

That's too bad for Spark. I thought he won, BUT..when you go down to Mexico and don't get the KO like you thought then go down in the fight and it ends up going the distance that's what happens....Spark seemed to know it..

Hometown decision. Spark dominated about 7 of the ten rounds. How Gollaz survived some of those hooks, is a testament to his toughness. But even the knockdown, which was caused by shots that included a few low blows, wasn't enough to win him that fight.

Sparks dominated. I had a feeling he was going to get robbed

I kind of agree. Spark dominated a lot of rounds...but in those rounds he allowed Gollaz to land enough "eye catching" shots to make it look competitive. The knockdown allows for a close decision so not a great robbery.

Yea the look on Sparks face after, the grin , was that of a man that knew he shouldn't have left it to the judges. A Guadalajaran...in Guadalajara...the writing was on the wall As the commentators so aptly put.

                    What a slugfest!

Gollaz = echoes of Navarrete --

especially the way he slings punches looping in from way out
