If Sheilds blocked it, he wasn’t worried for Morrell he was worried for his boy who’s sat on a belt for two years.

Sheilds blocked Morrell Jr. from Benavidez. Charlo was never a consideration because he's a HOT MESS!

Morrell's Trainer On Fighting Benavidez Next: I Don't Wanna Rush Him Into Something
          BY KEITH IDEC
Published Tue Jun 07, 2022, 08:23 AM EDT

David Morrell Jr.’s respected veteran trainer believes in his talented boxer’s ability and potential. Shields also appreciates Morrell’s ambition, which led the unbeaten WBA world super middleweight champion to state Saturday night that fighting David Benavidez next would be “perfect.”

With just seven fights on his professional record, however, Shields realizes Benavidez would be a gigantic step up in competition for Morrell, who stopped a huge underdog, Kalvin Henderson, in the fourth round of their fight Saturday night at The Armory.

“I don’t know, to tell you the truth,” Shields told BoxingScene.com following Morrell’s impressive victory. “As the trainer, you know, my job is to assess everything I see that he does well and didn’t do so well. And then I’ll put that against what I think Benavidez is. If I like it, I’ll say, ‘OK, I’m good with it.’ If I don’t, then I’ll say, ‘Let’s hold off and wait.’ ”

The Cuban-born, Minneapolis-based Morrell (7-0, 6 KOs) has looked tremendous while knocking out Mike Gavronski, Mario Cazares, Alantez Fox and Henderson in his past four fights. But Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) is an elite-level super middleweight who has nearly four times as much professional experience as Morrell.

“It’s a huge fight,” said Shields, who also trains unbeaten WBC middleweight champ Jermall Charlo. “This kid wants to fight everybody, but sometimes you have to save fighters from themselves, you know, and take a better path, so that you don’t run into something that you’re not ready for. At the same time, let me tell you something, this kid, man, he wants to learn and he wants to beat everybody.

“But I just think that I’ll take a clear look at it. Right now, do I feel confident that he could beat Benavidez or Caleb Plant? I think he’d give them all a run for their money right now. But I feel when this kid is ready, then we do that. I don’t wanna rush him into something. He goes and beats Benavidez, then what? He’s not gonna get Canelo.”

I didn't see the post-fight, but I hope he feels he's ready now? If not for Benavidez, then at least for Andrade or Shiskin!

Oh I gotcha. Thought you were saying he blocked David from fighting Charlo. I'd 100% block that for Charlos sake if I was his trainer lol

And this looks like it was before the Yerbossynuly fight, so fair enough. I think David showed he's ready for the next step in that fight.

Personally, I've been saying Morell would be the future of 175 after a layover at 168 since he was 2-0. I'm looking forward to watching his career.

This Ronnie Shields trainer is a HOT MESS. He's another huge joke in boxing if you ask me. Look at what he did to Jermall Charlo. He hasn't been seen in the ring for nearly 2 years.

He says Benavidez got 4x pro experience than Morrell. Alantez Fox got 5x more and Morrell's other previous opponents had more or a bit less than Benavidez. And how did it all go for them?

This trainer's assessment is no different from any average boxing fan. It's based on eye test. Only difference is he's got a rep to protect, not necessarily his fighters.

What is disgusting about it is the rampant mismatches going on in this effing sport. Hypocrite fans wax poetic about fighters risking their lives and all that nonsense, yet they don't give a fkc about the overmatched victim who gets paid peanuts.

Brother, everything in boxing is about maintaining the undefeated record. You lose once and it's all over. There's no allowance for bouncing back. It's not only about trainers, managers blocking fights, fans are also responsible. You hear things like he ain't ready doe. He needs 3 more fights doe. There's totally no allowance for returning back in case of defeat. They'd rather see mismatches, showreel fights.

Canelo and others, for instance, are not undefeated, yet they learned from those defeats.

That's why I made a thread about this.

Why is losing once so horrible in the sport of boxing?
