  • Comments Thread For: Zhilei Zhang vs. Joe Joyce - CompuBox Punch Stats

Despite throwing 284 fewer punches than Joe Joyce, Zhilei Zhang landed 18 more power punches. Zhang's accuracy, especially in the power punch category (56%), nullified Joyce's work rate. Zhang couldn't miss with his left hand, and eventually, Joyce's right eye was too compromised for him to continue fighting.

I gave Joyce one round ( the 3rd ) . You can ague he won the 4th. Outside of that if was all Zhang, Good data.

I'm not one for Compubox, nice for activity, but its so open to interpretation for 'landed', but Zhang was landing clean all night.

They have power shots at 60% accuracy, and tbf, it probably was about that this time, because that straight left was landing for fun.

Have to give ZZ his credit. I didn't think it would be him to stop JJ. Can't be taking all those punches fight after fight and expect your body to hold up. Shakes things up a bit though doesn't it?

It does show what I was seeing though... Joyce got hit hard in the first round and it shocked him. The man who walks through power shots didn't fancy it and his activity dropped to levels we've never seen from him before. Basically, he got scared of Zhang's power.

From the third round on he woke up. His activity was increasing and Zhang's was slowing, even if the impact of Zhang's punches never reduced.

Without the injury this was set to be very interesting. The regularity that Zhang was landing damaging shots would most likely have won out, but he was definitely slowing and I think Joyce would have picked up rounds on activity alone as the fight went on.

I think Joyce will want a rematch and the plan would be simply to get through the first few rounds without damage. I'm not convinced he can avoid early damage though. He'll always get hit and Zhang hits hard.

ZZ's left hand has got to be landing at 100%. I didn't see him miss a single left straight.

Zhang handled Joyce's power, quite well 'So that is something to consider for the rematch'.

I would say Zhang and Dubois are the two fighters that have handled Joyce's power the best.

Dubois was not being shaken or deterred greatly until the stoppage in their fight 'Of course Joyce's power was having a effect on Dubois & Zhang but it was not stopping them in their tracks' Especially with Zhang etc.

Joyce was possibly fighting hurt tonight, and I think that is a test of durability also 'How a fighter reacts when hurt, or shaken by power'.

Not sure he was scared of the power alone, but he just couldn't see those southpaw punches coming.

Like every heavyweight, they just don't know how to prepare for a southpaw.

This was always poor matchmaking, Zhang has a chin, deceptively fast hands and power, Joyce even though people think he's granite chinned seem to forget he's got blitzed by the likes of Kuzmin in 30 seconds in the amateurs and it's not like your chin gets better with age,,,

He relies way too much on his "chin", engine and particularly against higher level opposition the jab which as we know is harder to get off with regularity against a southpaw.

this was ultimately his undoing against a bigger, stronger more technically sound opponent , the idea of a rematch seems absurd to me Zhang had almost a 100% connect rate with the straight left if not 100% and it seemed like he was just beginning to turn the screw as the fight was stopped.

Usyk would've torched him again had they fought. Watch their WBSS match.
