You make the bet thinking you are going to win No one places a bet thinking they will lose. My rule of thumb I don’t bet with a Stranger more than £50 that way I won’t be pissed if I pay or he /she doesn’t pay if I win

That's a good rule you have. If you're not willing to pay, don't make the bet. Of course everybody expects to win but it literally defeats the entire purpose of a bet if it's not paid.
