Canelo fans are really gonna go with the "Canelo is better because he stopped Plant" thing?

He never stopped him but he lit him up far more than Canelo ever did , who did nothing until the stoppage. David landed twice as many punches.

I wouldn't say "he's better because he stopped him" but Canelo is seemingly a more powerful puncher and better finisher in the fact that he was able to stop plant in less amount of punches landed and was also able to finish the job once he had him hurt whereas Benavidez had Plant hurt for 5 rounds and couldn't get him out of there.

Also, the quality of Canelo punches landed seem better, he seemed to land the cleaner more accurate blows whereas a lot of Benavidez' punches were grazing shots or partially blocked, he didn't have much clean work for someone who landed 300 punches as the stats say.

All this doesn't necessarily mean that Canelo beats Benavidez, David has a better engine, throws more, is a bigger, longer and potentially physically stronger guy that'll keep coming. I think someone like Bivol outboxes him quite comfortably but how Canelo does against Benavidez I'm not sure, I'd love to see that fight.

You could say the exact same thing about Canelo. What HOF did he beat in their prime?

I think it's more that Canelo needed 1/3rd less overall punches to put undefeated Plant away.

We can't blame the clinching, he did that against Canelo.

If Benny moves up and beats Biv, then we can say Benny is special.

Right now, all he did was something Nelo did better.
Beating Plant in and of itself doesn't make David deserving of a Canelo fight but his almost universally recognised status right now as the #2 fighter in the division will mean it's a bad look for Canelo not to fight him unless he's seeking out a tougher or more lucrative challenge and there ain't any of either at 168 I think.

From a personal persepctive whilst rematching Bivol would be a gutsy move worthy of applause I'm personally far more interested in seeing Canelo fight Benavidez than a re-run of the Bivol fight - and I know it's too much to expect but I'd rather Bivol vs Beterbiev than any other fight in the sport period.

              Either or for me.
And yes, Biv vs Bet and Nelo vs the winner.
I don't think Benny moves up and fights the winner if he beats Nelo.

Canelo is pretty accurate boxer-puncher so he is economical vs Ramirez 2.0 who is pressure fighter. Pressure fighter will always be a crowd pleaser.

that fight last night showed the level of these guys that canelo was beating at 168... and i dont mean that in a good way. plant, saunders, smith they are all the same, any good fighter makes easy work of them, cause thats what canelo is, a good fighter, not some legendary ATG that his fans like to make out

The winner of Benavidez vs Plant is the mandatory challenger for Canelo's WBC SMW belt, and we all know who that is. I don't know of any contingency stating that Benavidez had to beat Plant "better" than Alvarez did.
