The reality is that boxers get paid based on what they can sell, how good they advertise, how many viewers they can get. That’s always been the case. It’s not sad, it’s reality. Boxing salaries aren’t based on just skills, a lot of it has to do with revenue. It’s really unlike most sports.

When Mike Tyson was shot he was still the number 1 draw in boxing in the early 2000's. This is just a more extreme example of the economics of boxing.
