Hell, there's plenty of manufactured "Mexico vs. Puerto Rico", "Black Vs. White" storylines in boxing's history.
There was a reality to that though man. You’re telling me there wasn’t significant racial tension in the 80’s? That’s a promoter using socio-political to help sell a fight. It wasn’t manufactured, Holmes hated the fact Cooney was getting in his opinion financial privileges.

Wilder tried to play the race card in the modern day with the “till this day!” nonsense. Nobody really bought into it cause it didn’t feel real.

Now, if you had Usyk fight a Russian HW contender you can guarantee that fight could be sold based on political events, because it’s real.

I remember it for the wrong reasons though man. Like when they botched the invasion angle the following year.

Wrestlings is storyline driven though, we’re more invested in the story than seeing the match in most cases. Boxing is the other way round, we’re much more invested in seeing the fight than seeing a storyline play out.

It failed because Wilder's not Don King.

King's like Donald Trump or Vince McMahon, he knows how to manipulate people and create narratives and stories.

Wilder's my guy, but he's not that type of thinker.

Cooney wasn't that type of dude, that's why him & Holmes continue to be good friends to this day.

King and his promoters forced "Great White Hope" on him.

Different times man. King wouldn’t survive in this PC snowflake era.

Promoters don’t have the pull they used to have.
