That's beautiful! I grew up in the BX, right across the street from my Grandmother (until 18), and Great Grandmother (until 11), both of them from coastal South Carolina. That culture was my reality! I grew up eating at that table on the regular! It was NYC, until you crossed that threshold! Then you were in SC! Hats came off, slang stopped, welcome to South Carolina! Lol! That's what makes you who you are! WAR BROWNY!!

As an American, I understand that culture trumps geography! NYC has Chinese, who have never been to China, ***s, that have never been to Israel, Puerto Ricans, who have never been to Puerto Rico, etc., etc., but the cultural presence in the home is authentic! So for me, your culture identifies you more than you're geography!

Danny probably thought that it was great to see his origins, as Puerto Rico is such a pretty place compared to big American cities which are made out of cement, but I'm sure when he returned to Philadelphia, his family and friends are where most of his heart belongs which is most likely is a hybrid distillation of his Puerto Rican and American heritage, a culture of its own, and more titled toward one or the other based on how many generations back from his ancestral origins. As an American, I understand that culture trumps geography! Maybe so, but I don't see people questioning Chinese Americans, who've never been to China, or ***s, who have never been to Israel, so I don't like seeing people questioning Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans, etc., born and raised in the U.S.! I think it's counter-productive!

No one should ever question anyone as if being from another country or mixed cultures means they are watered down versions of a current or original culture. Everyone is unique and culture or geography is at a lower importance and platform than everyone's unique personality and character. Who we all are inside is at a higher echelon that culture and geography. But, in a world where people question someone and call them "not one of us" because they weren't born or raised with them like Danny could have experienced and like Oscar did - or an outsider claiming that a person in the US is not 100% Puerto Rican or Mexican, etc., the former mindset is hard to change - but the latter mindset is messed up because it distances people.Maybe so, but I don't see people questioning Chinese Americans, who've never been to China, or ***s, who have never been to Israel, so I don't like seeing people questioning Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans, etc., born and raised in the U.S.!
