Since when do fighters hide behind their promoters?

This is a new thing to be fair. Fighters frequently are saying: well he's with another promoter and you know what that means. Those of us that are old enough: no we don't.

Hagler never said well you got to talk to my promoter, Tyson wasn't like well let's see what my promoter thinks. Fighters called out fighters, fights got made, and boxing was exciting. Promoters are getting too much press these days.

Now it's like well I don't know, I'll have to ask me mum if I can come out and play.

Getting really old hearing people regurgitate this like it's 100% bonafide fact. Facts are that it's all bullshit and a great excuse to save face in the media.

    It's been going for years.

It didn't start with Spence, but he certainly popularized the terms he's on the "wrong side of the street." Or "cross the street" or whatever combinations of words along those lines.

It has, but not forever. I'm really curious when it started though.

That's why this sport need an aggressive media or youtubers that launch follow up questions. Like if a fighter is calling out some guy with free agent status, as an example, you should follow up by asking, "Well, why don't you ask your management team to contact the guy for you?" Or "Will you be talking to Haymon about this fight?"

Ever since promotional companies exclusively lined themselves up with networks it has been down hill from there.

Floyd Mayweather said "I let, I let, Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe conduct my bouts" whilst flustered when Mosley confronted him after the Marquez fight.

This new generation have no balls anymore. Throw in the fact that they forgot the promoter works for them and its a bad combo.

I'm more curious about whether those problematic fights in the past eventually happened, or one side or the other made compromises, or agreed to make adjustments.
