That was always the hearn strategy: make Wilder fight Whyte, and any other tough fights before AJ ... hopefully to wear him down and make him more vulnerable and manageable for AJ. Preferably someone else may have been able to pin a loss on Wilder and AJ could duck the fight altogether.
Fury did it, but he's also at the top of the game ... it did perhaps take something out of Wilder, but AJ isn't holding onto any belts anymore. And there's Fury and Usyk to contend with, plus all the hungry up and comers.
