a casual fan catches the big pay-per-views, knows who the biggest names are but doesn't know too much about the sport as a whole (divisions, sanctioning bodies, champions vs. beltholders, etc)...

Basically what I was going to say. I'd probably take it a step further and say the casual fan is unaware that boxing exists beyond HBO, Showtime and PPV (possibly not even aware of boxing on Showtime, since they only boast about 25% of the audience HBO enjoys)

The casual boxing fan can probably join in on a debate over whether or not Paul Malignaggi got robbed against Juan Diaz, but couldn't really tell you much about Vic Darchinyan.

The casual boxing fan most likely hasn't seen Wlad fight since last year (even though he's fought once in 2009, and in arguably the most significant fight of his career), and is perhaps seeing Vitali this weekend for the first time in five years.

The casual boxing fan made sure to tune in for Gatti-Ward II and III, but more than likely didn't see the first fight until months after it happened.

The casual boxing fan is now aware that Manny Pacquiao has won titles (lineal or alphabet) in six separate weight classes, but probably can't name more than two fighters he actually beat for those titles - and chances are "Oscar de la Hoya" will be one of their guesses.

They mainly watch the big PPV fights, maybe 4 or 5 a year.

They recognize the big names like Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, and Oscar De La Hoya ; but they know nothing about hte lesser known guys like Edwin Valero, Joan Guzman, Humberto Soto, etc....

They don't know they weightclasses, and often match up opponets in casual conversation that make no sense at all, and often times ask about fights that already happened years ago but they never saw ; "Bernard Hopkins or Oscar De La Hoya, who'd win?"

They won't watch a Shobox program, a "Boxing After Dark", or a "Friday Night Fights" card all the way through ; they tend to watch action fights only.

Don't they show any local fights in Europe?

I would just like to know what you would define as the make up of a casual boxing fan.

someone who enjoys fisticuffs, but doesn't follow boxing.

No I think anyone who stays up that late is a little more than a casual fan regardless of their knowledge. I'm a casual baseball fan and I'd never stay up till 4am to watch a game. I think there's the casual fan, the follower, and the hardcore fan (guys who actually box and know their history).. I'd say the majority of NSB are followers of boxing. Like someone said in another thread, I don't think a casual fan would got through the trouble of making an account to post here.
