Comments Thread For: Oleksandr Usyk Named WBO Male Fighter Of The Year During 35th Annual Convention

The hits keep on coming for Oleksandr Usyk. A repeat win over England's Anthony Joshua saw Ukraine's Usyk successfully defend his WBA 'Super'/IBF/WBO heavyweight titles this past August 21 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The win came eleven months after dethroning Joshua (24-3, 22KOs) with a competitive but clear unanimous decision last September 25 on the road at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London.

Ignoring Witherspoon, 6 wins in a row over Glowacki, Briedis, Gussiev, Chisora and then Joshua x2, in hostile territory, following an unbeaten 200 fight span at amateur level, is killer stuff.

I highlight this because ppl have got a habit of forgetting how impactful events felt at the time, but I remember back when there was loads of bitching about “a-side/b-side” back in late 2018, and against this whiny backdrop, Usyk had just unified CW by pillaging belts from his opponents’ backyards like Genghis Khan.

The hardcores round here (the only ones who knew who he was) were in awe. And rightly so.

I wonder who will rank higher in boxing history Usyk or Loma.

Wow, boxing scene experts saying Usyk was to small and had no chance against AJ in 1st fight, so he did it twice.

As of today, I would say Usyk. But we'll need a flash back when both fighters careers are over.

Usyk's take over of a very competitive cruiserweight division in the WBSS tournament was the stuff of boxing legend. Every fight he had was in the opponent's backyard!

Before the tournament kicked off, I had him down as a talented but scatter-brained clown who would probably end up getting chinned by one of the big punchers like Kudrayshov, Dorticos or Gassiev. His technical skills, heart, discipline and chin were a revelation to me. I've been a big fan of his ever since.

Heavyweights usually have a more prominent place in boxing history than the smaller guys
