  • Comments Thread For: Canelo-Golovkin Trilogy Clash Closes Chapter With No Debate on Rightful Victor

By Corey Erdman - For the better part of five years, the boxing world has been debating Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin. That won't stop, even after Saturday night, nor will it any time soon. Alvarez and Golovkin provided the sport with its finest three-fight display of high-level boxing this era has seen, and as with all closely contested rivalries over the years, banter pertaining to them won't stop now. Making the discussion all the more heated is the fact that they also gave us two of the most discussed set of scorecards in boxing history as well.

Canelo now has 5 HOF scalps on his resume.

      Mosley
      Lara-maybe
      Cotto
      GGG 3x
      Kovalev

Jacobs potentialy but still needs a big win.

when the current crop of so called "great fighters" have 0 wins over HOF competition.

Canelo has by far the best resume of any current fighter but, Lara and Jacobs won't get in and Kovalev might not either.

Having said that, the fighters fight less now so it's difficult to build a resume - so standards for entry will have to drop.

Roman Gonzalez (lock) and Estrada (probably) both going to HOF so they have each other. Inoue has Donaire. Fury has Wilder (possibly) and Klitschko.

If the judges scored this fight a draw, it would have been the equivalent to the scoring in the first fight where Golovkin really won 8-4 or 9-3.

                  Golovkin won the first
                  2nd was either way
                  3rd was Canelo

seems theres some debate still to be had as to who won the trilogy as a whole

                  Golovkin needs to retire

Annoyingly, there was still debate as some were claiming it was a close fight doing mental gymnastics trying to find rounds to give to GGG. I'm just frustrated with GGG's approach to the fight, he basically gave up the first half and showed how competitive he could've been during rounds 9 - 12 but left it far too late. Could've had a much better and more competitive fight but GGG blew it similarly to Loma against Lopez and even Quigg - Frampton.

I like GGG, he's had a decent career that could've been much better, last night was a poor performance (overall) that seemingly could've been much better and they're the reasons I find him and his career frustrating. Yeah it's a good career, he's achieved a lot but when scrutinized you find that some of the best names on his record (Jacobs, Derevey) are fights that could've/should've gone the other way.

As for the trilogy, the first Canelo fight is the only one he should've got the win, he was competitive and made the second one close but it was a clear Canelo win - I feel that some of the GGG fans take on last nights fight was as if they were watching the 2nd fight because they were saying it was close and competitive throughout but the right man got the win which is pretty much the 2nd fight. As the title suggests, there should be no debates about last night. It wasn't close and GGG has no case in claiming he won, he left it until the last 4 rounds to get going and probably only won two of those rounds. The trilogy ends 2 - 1 for Canelo.
