The commentary was really bad. It’s almost as if they were trying to write the narrative of the fight before it even happened. The first 2 rounds Canelo is getting picked off at range by the jab and he’s swinging and hitting mostly air…Oh, but he looks mad and mean, and aggressive, and dangerous. Let’s give him points for his tough guy posturing. Then in 3 round Canelo starts actually connecting and Golovkin looks like he’s very tentative to let his hands go, and now the announcers physic narrative is starting to come to fruition. See, see! Canelo’s looks like a beast, though he’s still missing a ton of big shots and getting picked off by jabs and the commentators are only mentioning the work that Canelo is doing, still ignoring some of his wild bombs that missed by 3 feet. But at least Canelo DID win most of those middle rounds. So the early cheerleading for Canelo ended up becoming the mid fight narrative.
I think there was too much excitement between the announcers which may have contributed to their disoriented dialogue. At one point Danny Jacobs called Canelo “Canglo”, or something similarly weird. I think they were just tripping over themselves because there was so much confusion going on around them. It was pretty weird, but also funny at times.
i think the entire production values of these DAZN events isnt really up to par tbh.
It really is bush league. especially when you rewatch some old HBO fights which really puts it into perspective. They were class top to bottom with presenters that were professionals who knew the sport and how to present, in contrast to the DAZN team which look like randoms plucked from youtube.
The Triple H comment was hilarious. Then I saw Kevin Iole tweeted that he was actually at the fight. This goes to show you how the HBO commentators with Lampley, Steward (replaced by Kellerman), and Merchant (who was replaced by Roy Jones) was second to none. Even Harold Lederman added a little bit of something. When HBO Boxing was still alive I remember so many people here just crapping on their commentary. Well, this is the type of garbage you get now.
Max Kellercunt and his CONSTANT overPRONUNCIATION of every OTHER word was REALLY irritatING. Merchant was great back in the day, but got so senile he'd be commentating on round one at the start of the final bell.
Lampley was a shit-for-brains ("****! ****! ****!") and Harold Lederman was like a Disney cartoon character. I honestly thought it was a spoof when I first head him speak.
They definitely had viable detractors, especially when MAX came ON BOARD as part of the TEAM.
But really it's like the HBO team at the end were a kick in the bollocks, and DAZN saw your bollocks off and feed them to geese.
