A prospect has to go through fights like this at some point if they want to move on to contender or champion status; Amir Khan against Prescott is a good example.

And a loss isn't a bad thing, in previous fights he's shown he only knows how to block punches with his face, I hope it teaches El Rayo some defensive responsibility and not to rely on his power all the time.

Edwin De Los Santos defeating Jose Valenzuela, was an unforeseen and unexpected occurrence.
There was a lot of hoopla surrounding El Rayo, but this was one case where the thunder struck faster than the lightening!

I wasn’t big on Valenzuela. He was under my “wait and see” list. He got some brutal kos but I hadn’t seen him get hit yet. When I see prospects finally get into a tough fight, I always want to see how they respond when they get hit. Once he got caught he didn’t go to plan B. He stayed trying to get the ko against a guy who had true skill.

Santos was using his jab and hooking to the body as well as throwing bombs of his own. It got to a point where Santos was smiling at him and didn’t care about Valenzuelas power and walked through him. Valenzuela was reduced to just a big left hand and that’s it. Valenzuela when hit back hard didn’t or couldn’t adjust.

This wasn’t an upset in my book. You had a known guy against an unknown guy which is why some have called it an upset. I liked the courage of Valenzuela, but he looked very easy to hit last night. I don’t think that he could’ve done anything to beat Santos last night. Santos looks like he has the goods to be a serious threat in the division. I do need more though.

Agree. But his team should have known that he wasn't ready at that time to deal with someone like Edwin De Los Santos. You could tell from his previous fights that this was a massive banana peel. I blame Benavidez Sr. because all of his boxers block punches with their face and body.
