Comments Thread For: Charles Martin-Devin Vargas Added To Ruiz-Ortiz Undercard 9/4 In Los Angeles

Eight months after he nearly knocked out Luis Ortiz, Charles Martin will return to the ring on Ortiz's undercard. BoxingScene.com has learned that the former IBF heavyweight champion has been added to the non-televised portion of the pay-per-view card that'll feature Ortiz and Andy Ruiz Jr. in the main event September 4 at ******.com Arena in Los Angeles. Martin (28-3-1, 25 KOs) is scheduled to face Devin Vargas (22-7, 9 KOs) in a 10-round fight designed to keep Martin busy while he pursues a bigger fight.

Never heard of Vargas, however they could have given Martin someone better than this for a stay busy fight, he very nearly beat Ortiz last time out, he got unlucky though and got caught, with his arm stuck in the rope too.

Devin Vargas is 40 and coming off a long layoff preceded by a 4th round KO. This is the type of fight that gets people hurt.

Vargas is the guy that promoters feed to their 2nd-tier fighters to KO and stay busy. Breazeale, Fa, Ruiz, Zhang all scored wins over him. Probably about the same level as Alexander Flores (who Martin incidentally KO'd back in 2014).

A win over Vargas allows Martin to stay somewhat relevant until he, in turn, gets fed to someone else (perhaps Frank Sanchez).

Martin vs Breazeale would have been better and still winnable for Martin if they need him to get back in the win column. Got a good match with Ortiz vs Ruiz but put BS on the undercard. Why this dude has 200+ fighters I'll never know.

Stay busy fight. I’m ok with it. Martin is a decent fringe contender. It’s hard to believe he once held the IBF title. He won the lottery with that Glazkov injury. Turned it into like 8 million US…
