Seems like a lot of people are high on this kid. I mean, he's strong and hits hard and stuff, but it's not like I haven't anything he's doing before or there is anything really remarkable about him. Last fight the other night, he was getting hit with good shots and I feel like a guy who's top tier and seasoned will put this kid out of his misery. Don't want to sound like a hater, but I've seen people on Twitter say he'll be better than Spence, Crawford, etc which to me is crazy talk. I don't even think Spence and Crawford are like boxing gods level, just on a way different level I don't think Ortiz will get to.
Am I the only one not vibing Vergil Ortiz Jr.?

The most impressive thing was that body shot KD he threw in. That’s a great weapon to have. I see where you are coming from though. His opponent habitually dipped to his left as his way to avoid most shots. I’d have liked to have seen Ortiz or his corner notice that and send uppercuts to that side, get him to duck into one. Not unlike Canelo vs BJS. Plant even ducked a lot to one side. Still for a year off and a game, brave athletic opponent it was a good experience for him. He doesn’t need to be fighting a Bud Crawford yet.
I was impressed with the cut management in the corner. From since I was a kid nothing has improved like the corner being able stop cuts from being as big an issue like they once were. All the credit.
Normally I’d love to see a young fighter pushed early just cause why not? 147 is shark infested though. Let’s get this guy a little bit better. -
He was coming off the longest lay off of his career and a career threatening illness & came back vs an awkward southpaw who knows how to survive. McKinson has a style that could make anyone look bad.
I think if he listened to his corner he'd have got him out of there earlier but he got the rounds and it'll put him in good stead.
I get there is nothing that stands out in particularly he's not blindingly fast or freakishly athletic, he doesn't have one punch power as such but I think a combination of things he does very well makes him a problem. His jab, pressure, bodypunching, chin, stamina, ability to cut the ring off. 12 rounds vs him is going too feel like an eternity. He's all substance.Comment

He's perfect for 147. It'd be a mistake for him to move up. The guy is too small.
He can give Crawford and spencer a tough fight for sure. He easily beats booty ennis.Comment

Agree to disagree here, not going to attempt to change your mind but looking back Vergil Ortiz Jr has faced varying adversity and pushed through his circumstances.
Examples such as he had covid and was healing from an injured right arm but didn't cancel his bout against Hooker in which he faced a previous rangy former champion at 140.
Withstood and recovered well from getting hit by a power puncher that also caught Crawford who has 22 wins18 KOs in which he dominated right after, landing twice the amount 148-of-389 total punches (38%) compared to Kavaliauskas 75-of-391 (19.2%).
Then he also still fought in the next four months after having a serious illness called Rhabdomyolysis facing a different style in a surprisingly durable slippery southpaw in Mckinson who has a very low knockout ratio however.Last edited by Malvado; 08-09-2022, 01:42 AM.Comment

I see a lot of things he does that he will pay for against the best guys, they been feeding him easybeats and he has shown no respect for them just walking through, will be a bit different next level up, a real good prospect.Comment

Worst take I heard in awhile, TBH… Truth is Vergil is a special talent that possess a great deal of skills besides his thudding power. His jab is crisp and powerful like the great Monzon, while his boxing IQ is a thing a beauty which he shown by methodically breaking down all of his 19 opponents. However, the one thing that separates Vergil from everyone else @ welterweight is his conditioning. People forget Vergil was a cross country runner for his High School which helped develop his lungs capacity and stamina as a boxer. That’s why in the later rounds when his opponents are slowing down Vergil shots to the body or jabs are still as strong as the beginning of the fight, you can actually see his opponents will breaking down when they see Vergil still fresh in the later part of the fight.Seems like a lot of people are high on this kid.
