By Cliff Rold - It was hard in the build to the fight to find anyone rationally picking World Lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez to defeat Floyd Mayweather. The 32-year old Mayweather (40-0, 25 KO) of Grand Rapids, Michigan showed the world why Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
For almost every second of twelve rounds, the five-division former titlist who retired in 2008 as the World Welterweight champion and a leader in the pound for pound debate dominated the smaller, slower, reigning 36-year old Lightweight champion Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KO) of Mexico, capturing a unanimous decision made to look easy.
It was Mayweather’s first fight since stopping then-undefeated reigning Jr. Welterweight champion Ricky Hatton in December 2007.
Both men came in below the Welterweight limit, Mayweather at 146 and Marquez a career high 142 in his sixth fight since leaving the 126 lb. Featherweight division. There had been some controversy about the weight as an agreed upon catchweight of 144 lbs. was missed by Mayweather and, reportedly, ended up costing him in the neighborhood of $600 thousand in penalties for the two pounds over.
