It's more malignant narcissism than ego in my opinion. He craves constant outside validation. He would benefit from therapy and I mean that seriously, he probably had an emotionally neglectful childhood. Therapy would help him develop meaningful relationships beyond people pretending to love him because he has money and fame. He probably lacks the self awareness to submit to it though.
