Comments Thread For: Unification Fever Continues to Spread

By Cliff Rold - Boxing fans who want to see the best fight the best don't have as much to complain about as usual. Sure, some corner of the boxing fandom will find something to complain about at any time. It's a sport that breeds a certain cynicism. Still, even the grouchiest have to admit good things are happening.

Unifications are good for boxing- especially if it’s the top guys fighting each other. Thankfully we’ll get to see more of that this year. It’s nice to see only one champion in each division.

I largely agree but I am ready for the post-belt era, with the TBRB being the route towards that. The Inoue - Butler situation highlights the nonsense of the sanctioning bodies, the latter is not even top ten in the independent rankings. Inoue doesn't need to pay another sanctioning fee to be recognised as the "undisputed" World Bantamweight Champion.

If boxing can't run without these money-sucking sanctioning organisations then unifications are good but there needs to be an agreed way forward for unified champions to satisfy mandatories whilst still allowing for voluntary defences etc.

          I'm grumpy xD
But I couldn't be happier at undesputed season, at last real world champions & not just belt holder's preaching A-side hiding on a side of the street.
I'd also rather see a post belt era based around tbrb but I won't hold my breath.
My only gripe left is the Heavyweights, we know who the champ is but with rematchroom & Aj constantly ducking or blocking undesputed for 4 year's now it's becoming pathetic, ducked Wilder in 18 (yes Wilder ducked back in 19) blocked Ruiz Wilder undesputed, blocked Fury Usyk undesputed.
Your not 2 times if it's only half time.

Considering the circumstances, namely the extensions and specifications which were afforded to John Riel Casimero by the WBO due to ''illness'', and the BBBofC interference in Casimero-Butler, the WBO had little choice in the matter ; otherwise face a lawsuit by Butler's management. They had to strip Casimero, however I agree that Paul Butler does not validate Naoya Inoue as 'Undisputed'.

Ironically, there is more merit to claim 'undisputed' in beating the man that was stripped/former champion. If you ask me, I line them up to leave no doubt....since you know I would not want there to be ''dispute'' . Bring on Paul Butler, then we want John Riel Casimero, WHO NECKS?! Boxing usually dont work like that, I get it, but sometimes it does -- Paul Butler is a English-Bum.

Absolutely. He's the lineal and true bantamweight champ. He was no. 1 and donaire was no. 2

Floyd's path to greatness was retire every 30 seconds. Stay in the spotlight however possible then make a comeback. Tyson Fury is following that recipe as we speak. But there is another legend of the sport unifying, going undisputed, and moving up to seek greatness. Retirement comebacks use to pay more in the Floyd era, now that is all changing because of one man. It ain't Floyd or Tyson, their days are over. The true fighter is coming back into style.

I care about who they fight, not the unification of these organizations that are living off their history. Smith and Beterbiev is a good unification because they are both good LHW. It makes for an interesting fight. It is not the belts. I know Terrence Crawford was undisputed at 140, but not one of the boxers he beat has made a name for themselves after he moved up which has honestly diminished what he did in my opinion.

There are great fights for unifications out there. Golovkin unifying with Charlo would be legit. Briedis unifying against Okolie at CW would be respectable. We all know the Spence/Crawford unification has a chance to be an all time great. But the boxer makes the belt, not the other way around. It makes for a nice resume builder, but if you are fighting has been or never was type fighters to get those belts, why celebrate that?
