It work’s similar to having a World title, you have cycles of mandatories and voluntaries. For a voluntary, you nominate an opponent to the board and the board will accept or reject their status as a challenger for the title. It’s quite unusual for the board to reject a voluntary challenger. They did reject Reece Cartwright as an opponent for Azeez though, that’s why that was a non-title fight.

The BBBofC tend to bend over backwards for the big promoters and TV networks. We seen it recently with Smith vs O’Maison. O’Maison hadn’t won a fight at 140 in over 4 years but because the fight would do good business in Sheffield and was promoted by an influential outfit the BBBofC approved putting the vacant British title on the line.

Reckon at least one will be a continental opponent with a superficially reasonable record who's really there to add to the Azim early KO highlight reel. Guess we'll see.
I hope they send him the domestic route but like you I expect them to bring in several international opponents. The 18-0 Eastern Europeans for WBA international titles and so on.

How frequent is the mandatory cycle? Looking at the BBBofC circulars, mandatories seem quite frequent - more so than the year (isn’t it?) you’d get for a world title without defending, but then again Joyce held onto the British for absolutely ages. Yes, I remember thinking it was odd O’Maison had been approved. Interesting re: Azeez, didn’t know that.

I’d say around 1 in 3 would be a mandatory. Obviously depends on how active you are and/or the talent pool available. The domestic scene at HW is really thin. Wardley is gonna have the same problem Joyce had in terms of potential challengers.

Very true, have got Clarke/Dacres/Adeleye/Fisher/Nick Campbell to come through, but obviously promotional difficulties and the fact that none seem an obvious fit at the moment. Maybe Kash Ali? Poor domestic scene though as you say.

Wardley is unlucky as he’s sort of in between generations if that makes sense. By the time the up and coming HW’s reach the domestic scene he likely will have moved on. Wardley is very raw IMO, I think a couple of British title defences could really help his development. I wouldn’t mind the Ali fight tbh, Wardley is the clear favourite but he still needs to work on a few things before they move him towards European/World level. I’ve heard he could possibly fight Dempsey McKean for the Commonwealth. I like that fight too.

Fan of the McKean fight, would be good. What would you say Wardley’s ceiling is? I wasn’t terribly impressed with his boxing ability early on against Gorman but he’s athletic, clearly hits hard and he seems a different animal when he’s hurt - reckon he’ll ever reach Parker level?

Those make the most sense for him.

European level most probably. Unless he develops his skills a lot. He’s big, strong and has some pop but definitely a bit limited.
