Benavidez is currently going through his fan hype phase.
The fan hype phase is when a young fighter, who has good power and lots of KO’s, albeit against low opposition, receives extreme and unreasonable fan hype him up while criticizing tested fighters.
Hence why his mere two wins, over two aging past prime fighters (Dirrell, Lemiuex), has granted him legendary status. His wins over these fighters also grant him fantasy fight privileges, where he beats everyone from 160 to 200lbs.
Fans are very fickle though. Once a fighter steps up and starts looking average, they jump ship to the next untested, undefeated fighter.
Right now Benavidez is also enjoying the “boogie man” status, where everyone is ducking him according to his fans.
DB is essentially elite without fighting any elites.
