Weekend Preview: Floyd Steals a Page From Hopkins’ Book

By Jake Donovan - It’s a given that any promotion involving Floyd Mayweather Jr. will feature him in the role of the bad guy. He’s embraced the role from the moment he realized it paid better than the blueprint former handlers Top Rank had laid out for his career.

There are only so many different ways to play the villain before you eventually cross the line and simply become pompous for pompous’ sake. Even when you reach that point, you can still maintain a level of respect among your peers. It ain’t bragging when you’re that good, and the sad truth about boxing is that negative publicity is still publicity. [details]

Floyd is a egotistical prick but at the same time a smart businessman. He stirs controversy to promote his fight.

Bernard did it to hype a fight...and was talking about his opponent...

Floyd did it to get press IMO...and is talking about commentators...

Floyd's **** was pointless...Bernard was tryna mess with his opponent's psyche...

I don't love him and I don't hate him. And, I don't watch him to see him lose. Plus I known his opponents for the last 6yrs had no chance in hell of winning. But, I watch him cuz I love boxing. I try to watch every fight that I can. For me it has nothing to do with Floyd.

As someone else said - Floyd is a heel. It's a term usually reserved for the villain in 'pro wresslin who gets everyone worked up and in turn people pay in hopes that they will lose. Of course in wrestling it's completely manufactured to be this way because they know good vs bad is what sells.

I can't help but laugh at people who take these comments seriously. There are people STILL not willing to let go of what Hopkins said. Talk about falling for something hook, line, and sinker...

OK between this post and the one made earlier suggesting Hopkins said what he said to hype a fight, I take it that nobody actually read the article. Some of you are referring to Hopkins' "I'll never lose to a white boy" jab at Calzaghe a couple of years ago. I'm specifically referring to what took place four years ago, when Hopkins attacked Steward, then Merchant and all but dared HBO to publicly root against him for the Taylor fight.

What Hopkins said about - and to - Steward wasn't for the sake of hyping a fight. It wasn't even said in public, but during HBO's pre-fight fighters meeting prior to the first Taylor fight, which took place behind closed doors. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure Hopkins' comments were made available until well AFTER the fight.

As for Floyd and taking him seriously - sorry, but that's a copout. It's not the first time he's dragged race into a situation that absolutely didn't call for it. It's not salesmanship; but Floyd further exposing himself as an ignorant jackass.

If it helps sell the PPV, then shame on those who buy it for no other reason than that. But race-baiting still an acceptable marketing tactic in 2009? You'll have to explain to me how that's not moving backwards.

I did read the article and I was responding to what someone else had written referring to Hopkins' "white boy" comment and using it as a parallel to what's happening now.

Whether his comments were made in poor taste is another subject. I'm just calling them for what they appear to be - a sales tactic since they were made the week of the fight.

When I say "taking him seriously" I'm referring to those who might take his comments to heart and in turn want to drop down money to see him lose which is precisely what he wants. You can find his comments as an ignorant way to sell the fight and criticize him for it, I see no problem with that.
