  • Comments Thread For: Dmitry Bivol Shocks Canelo Alvarez, Wins Dominant Decision

By Keith Idec - LAS VEGAS - Canelo Alvarez's admirable ambition caught up with him Saturday night. Undefeated Dmitry Bivol beat boxing's former pound-for-pound king in Alvarez's second attempt to become a light heavyweight champion. Alvarez entered the ring at T-Mobile Arena as more than a 5-1 favorite, according to MGM Grand's sportsbook, but Bivol, a career-long light heavyweight, had offensive and defensive answers for the four-division champion throughout their 12-round, 175-pound title fight and won a unanimous decision.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 7, live on DAZN, excluding Latin America and Mexico. The event will be offered exclusively on DAZN Pay-Per View (PPV).

Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) returns to Las Vegas for his first Cinco De Mayo fight since 2019 where he defeated Daniel Jacobs at T-Mobile Arena in a Middleweight unification clash. The Mexican superstar has embarked on a sensational run of fights since that night, moving to Light Heavyweight to win a World title at a fourth weight against Sergey Kovalev before returning to Super Middleweight to beat Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant and becoming the first undisputed champion at 168lbs.

Canelo has chosen the toughest of paths once again for his next challenge as he attempts to become a two-time champion at 175lbs by meeting long-reigning WBA belt-holder Bivol. The 31-year-old (19-0, 11 KOs) has been untouchable as a pro in 19 outings in the paid ranks and Canelo will be his 10th defense of his crown. Bivol has seen off the likes of Joe Smith Jr., Jean Pascal, Sullivan Barrera and Isaac Chilemba on his path to meeting Canelo.

it will be his real (hopefully) fight since GGG, like Ramsy, Beterbiev's trainer, said - if it ever happens we wont be there just for a paycheck

Nash is no longer interested in any of the undercard with Hrgovic pulling out, but Nash will be there, lock, stock and barrel for the main event. Viva la Mexico. Nash out.
