There are plenty of active fighters who come from boxing royalty but there is something about Nico Ali Walsh that means he might be judged a little more harshly than most.

I called Brad Goodman to see about boxing Nico for his debut. I have no amatuer experience, would be making my debut, and was willing to take on the challenge.

Brad Goodman told me, "We're not interested in you, because Ali isn't your grandfather".

I was halfway tempted to say, "But Sonny Liston is"..

I really despised this kid, because he got an opportunity simply because he added Ali to Walsh. But now I have a weird affection for him. I hope he does well.

And, I'll forever know that I was ducked

Imagine if Nico Ali turns out to be as good as Tim Tszyu?

I have a hunch this is what Nico would rather do then fight: talk. I think he likes to humble brag about how great and hard it is to have a famous last name. It was on this site before Nico's first fight his coach said 'Yeah he's a work in progress but he talks too much'.

When I saw him last year, he looked talentless. Not a work in progress, not rough-edged: zero. The most impressive aspect of the night was how Bob Arum sat there watching the third-rate comedy in front of him with a straight face.

Go on Amazon or wherever and rent “The Harder They Fall,” the classic Bogart and Steiger film noir about building up a non-talent into a star. Almost 70 years later, nothing’s changed.
