If Fury vacates as he said he will retire, who will be the next WBC champion? Wilder is currently at #1. Why? I don't know. Perhaps their justification is that he only lost to the champ Fury and was competitive in his last fight, but mostly because all these organizations are businesses that would have a sellable commodity at the top. Given Whyte's rather lackluster performance and his not-so-good relationship with the WBC, it is highly unlikely he would be the #2 guy. Plus, he just had his mandatory shot.
So, who's going to be the next champion? The current rankings are as follows
1. Deontay Wilder
2. Joe Joyce
3. Joseph Parker
4. Frank Sanchez
5. Andy Ruiz
6. Arslanbek Makhmudov
7. Luis Ortiz
8. Filip Hrgovic
9. Michael Hunter
10. Tony Yoka
Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker may be fighting in July as per their recent interviews along with Frank Warren. Could that establish a contender against Wilder for the belt? Or would the WBC order Joe Joyce vs Wilder? If neither is available (I doubt that), it could be Wilder vs Frank Sanchez or Andy Ruiz. The WBC will definitely want a known guy at the top to pull in the money. Ideally for the WBC, that would be Wilder vs Ruiz since both can be decent crowd pullers. But only if Wilder plans to fight again and they can get a way to sanction that.
