  • Comments Thread For: Yordenis Ugas: I Was Out Of Boxing, Totally Out Of The Picture; And Look At Me Now

By Keith Idec - ARLINGTON, Texas - There were nights nine years ago when a depressed Yordenis Ugas didn't have enough to eat. Ugas had defected to the United States from Cuba in 2010, but he hadn't come close to realizing his "American Dream." The 2008 Olympic bronze medalist shared a tiny apartment with three other boxers in North Bergen, New Jersey, and his Miami-based manager had stopped sending him money.

Interesting that Ugas didn’t mention his connection with fellow Cuban Aroldis Chapman, superstar closer for the NY Yankees. But in any event, Yordenis has come a very long way in his career and in life. I remember watching a fight of his on YouTube years ago; I didn’t think he would amount to anything. Yet here he is. Good luck to him tonight.

Hard not to cheer for him. He truly has paid his dues for this payday.

I see a Spence win, but I will not mind at all if Ugas takes hime the belts.

Incredible what he has overcome. Some stints in prison, being down and out, poor, making a hazardous trip on a boat from Cuba to America.

That's a lot more than most have to. He suffered a few losses early on, was dropped by Top Rank I think. Then he thought it might over, but he came back to become a world champion.

Even if he loses to Spence, as most expect, he can be proud of his accomplishments. A historic win over the great Pacquiao, that will always be on his record.

Yes, I like Yordenis Ugas. In addition, he was one of the nicer guys in boxing who has come a very long way. I am happy that he is getting this opportunity because he has earned it. Errol Spence didn't have to take this fight. So I tip my hat off to him also. He could have easily fought a tune up for his first bout coming off of his eye surgery. This is a very risky fight for him. Ugas can fight.

I guess that's the point, right? He was in the abyss and he's clawed his way back to push Shawn porter all the way and get the short end of the stick and he then convincingly outboxed Manny pretty much.

That should inspire lots of people in boxing or other sports.

Great Story I remember Ugas defecting was a big deal because of how young he was when he did which was very rare for Cuban fighters. The Amir Imam defeat on Arreola vs Stivernie undercard was clearly his wake up call. Was out of action for 2 years then all of a sudden I remember out of nowhere seeing him fighting Jamal James. Man worked his way back to contention and ultimately becoming World Champ
