Chavez is the Mexican GOAT!
Was Chavez Hype?

Castillo was a good fighter. You don’t compete for 15 rounds with Sal Sanchez and 11 with Arguello without being a decent operator. Go watch those fights instead of being a Boxrec revisionist. He was admittedly on the slide when Chavez beat him though I’ll give you that.
I didn't mention Castillo for a reason, he was a nobody that lost to all big names he fought. Never had a title either.
Chavez quit in the rematch against Randall over a cut. They went to the scorecards and he got the win.
Gamache was a c level fighter, extreme reach.
“Chavez quit” behave yourself…
The doctor stopped the fight. C’mon man stop with agenda driven sh**.
Gamache was decent fighter too. He was probably B level at best though. C level is a little harsh but fair.

I always thought too much was made of his long win streak. Very similar to Monzon, a guy who padded his record in Argentina and then fought washed up, smaller fighters in the biggest fights of his career. Made a name off the name of a well past prime Griffith and Napoles. Still better than Hopkins though.Comment

I grew up watching these guys and Castillo never beat anybody. A lot of fighters can go the rounds, and lose. Doesn't make them greats and worth mentioning when comparing them to a record of someone that beat them.

Nobody regards Tex Cobb as a great fighter do they? They remark at how much of a beating he could take, how tough he was. Cobb went 15 rounds with Holmes and distance with Norton, Dokes, Dougles. Cobb actually has a win against an old Shavers, but nobody remembers it because Cobb ****** and was just tough.
Castillo doesn't have 1 good win on his record so no, I'm not counting him for Chavez, nobody should. Talk about Boxrec revisionist, you see a 60-4 record at the time he fought Chavez and try to make an arguement he was something big when he wasn't to support the record.
To top it off, Castillo was fighting cab drivers too lol. When he was 56-4-2 he fought a 1-7, his record is littered with opponents like that.
Chavez said he couldn't continue so the ref stopped the fight. Go watch it!
Gamache was terrible. Biggest win was Jeff "The Worst" Mayweather and ok he fought Gatti at the end of his career, but Gatti ended his career early.
Gatti toyed with him and Gatti was a b level fighter. It wouldn't have mattered if Gamache had 13 years in the game or 3, Gatti would have always beat him in brutal fashion.Comment

He went 15 rounds with Salvador Sanchez and won rounds. He was very competitive with Alexis Arguello before being stopped in the 11th. That alone proves he was a good fighter. I never said he was great but he’s definitely worth mentioning as one of the many good fighters that Chavez beat. You’re focusing far too much on wins and losses rather than what actually happened in those fights.

I also consider Cobb a good Heavyweight. You don’t give Norton problems, Dokes problems, beat Earnie Shavers without having a considerable amount of ability. The only guy I ever remember beating him easily was Holmes who was the best HW of his generation. Hell in this weak ass modern era Cobb would have probably picked up a belt.
You’re really gonna judge Gamache on the last fight of a 50 fight career when he was beat up and in his mid 30’s. C’mon man
Gamache was nothing special but “terrible” the guy was a world champion for f***s sake.

Hector Camacho, Edwin Rosario, Roger Mayweather, Tony Lopez, Juan LaPorte, Rocky Lockridge, Jose Ramirez and are I certain that you are an idiot that doesn’t know a ******** thing about boxing.
Tell me that story again about how Canelo is as elusive as Pernell Whitaker.Comment

You’d be better off taking this to the boxing history section. The majority of poster here have never seen him fight.I remember the hype of Chavez when I was a kid and how close he was getting to 100-0. But looking back, has the historical account of Chavez become exaggerated in the retelling?
Looking at Meldrick Taylor vs McGirt.
I'm thinking, Meldrick isn't as good as I thought he was. I'm sure most everyone here is in agreement that he gave Chavez his first loss.
Then you got to look at Chavez record and it kind of lacklustre. Best wins are Mayweather, Lockridge, Laporte, an old Ramirez, Camacho, Haugen, and a cracked Taylor. Most of those 107 wins are legitimate cab drivers. Chavez is the fighter where the cab driver reference was coined. When Chavez was 70-0 he fought a guy that was 4-3, and when he was 82-0 he fought a guy that was 10-10. You can't get away with that stuff anymore.
Pundits look back and rate this guy way high to the point Chavez is a hero of myth and legend. Chavez was a good fighter, but to me it really feels like there is a lot of fluff between the layers.Comment

Cab drivers or not, how many cab drivers do you think you could defeat in 100 fights? i'd venture to say probably less than 10. Some things just cant be examined on paper, one has to be there, in the moment, to fully understand the event. Chavez methodically and convincingly beat fighters who beat other fighters convincingly themselves. Looking at record books will never paint a true picture.Comment

Everybody loses rounds, lol. I'm focusing on who's who not a nobody that lost every big fight and fought a banana boat full of cab drivers.

Cobb won rounds against Holmes and was competitive against Norton, don't mean anything unless you win. Nobody remembers Castillo and apparently you don't remember Cobb because Cobb ******.
Tex was a tough c level fighter that threw fights at the end of his career. Shavers was 36 years old and had been knocked out 4x by the time he fought Cobb. Not even two years later he was losing to a 17-10 bum Santemore, Shavers was done.
I'm going to judge Gamache on his entire career of sh.it. He was always a c level fighter and never beat nobody. What part of that doesn't get through your malfunctioning brain? He beat a 19-1 nobody for a vacant WBA. Gamache doesn't have a single name on his record. Name his top 5 wins? You can't, you won't, because it doesn't exist.
Picking Gamache as a notable for Chavez is like picking Bruseles as a notable for Mayweather. It's silly.Comment
