There are definitely some guys who have taken bigger risks and faced better prime opposition than Canelo. But canelo does have the name value to his resume. You can also try and change the narrative of what the canelo vs ggg rematch was and we can get into the fact that hardly any of the ringside press scores had canelo winning and the fact that he only won a split decision and the fight was on the table in the 12th, but that’s not my original point. My point is canelo taking fights with guys after he’s noticed there is less risk. If you know boxing, you’d realize that nearly everyone he’s fought from waiting out ggg, to Jacobs, to Kovalev to smith to Saunders to Plant were all coming off fights or going through stretches where they did not look impressive. That’s not coincidental. That’s exactly why the ggg trilogy was waited out as long as it was because even a mid 30s ggg gave canelo hell. The timing is much safer now than it would have been in 2019.

You're the guy creating the false narrative. You can make a fair case that Canelo cherry-picked an aging Kovalev to pick up a LHW strap, but that other stuff is laughable. Canelo went after all of those other guys because they were reigning world champions in his weight class. Had Canelo fought (and KO'd) Charlo, Andrade and Benavidez last year, you would be the guy jumping up and down claiming he strategically ducked Saunders (too crafty), Callum Smith (too big and strong) and Caleb Plant (too slick). You'll feed your narrative any way you can. There are definitely some guys who have taken bigger risks and faced better prime opposition than Canelo. But canelo does have the name value to his resume. GGG is making a mistake. I don't believe he can knock out Canelo, nor can Canelo knock out GGG. And boxing's money men will never, ever let Canelo lose a decision. Plus, GGG made a terrible mistake ditching Sanchez. Instead of walking down his opponents and smashing them into submission with broken ribs and eye sockets, he's been coached to feint and counterpunch and dance. None of that his GGG's game. He's a preternaturally strong man for his size, and that is his forte. Even at age 40, he could probably shove Canelo into the corners and pound him bloody -- if his trainer would tell him to do that. And yet, even if he did that, and even if Canelo went to the hospital with broken facial bones and cracked ribs, the decision would still go to Canelo.
I just hate seeing an aging fighter trying to recapture bygone glory when the boxing establishing is flat-out not going to allow that to happen. A sad ending to a darn good career.Comment

You’re living in denial. The following can’t be denied:

Did canelo wait out ggg 2 yrs and wait until he turned 35 after the Brook and Jacobs fight? Yes. Did he wait him out 4 yrs again now? Yes. What did Jacobs last fight look like before he faced canelo? He had fight some thought he lost vs Derveyenchenko. Did he fight smith when he went to 168 and said he was chasing greatness? No, he fought someone smith knocked out, Fielding. When did he finally choose smith? After smith got whooped by Ryder and was talking about outgrowing the weight. And he he gave him short notice. Did he fight Saunders when everyone was asking for it at mw after Saunders beat Lemieux? No, by the time he fought Saunders, he was basically a semi retired fighter who hadn’t looked good in 3 yrs. Plant last impressive performance was when he won that belt vs Uzcategui. We already know Kovalev was shot when he picked him. See, Floyd had a similar approach with assessing risk, but he at least had the understanding to get guys coming off big wins to increase the credibility of the fight. Canelo does the opposite, he waits until they look vulnerable and that’s when he takes the fight.

I genuinely hate that this fight is happening now.
So, he waited until GGG was 35 to fight him, squeaked out two robberies, and now is waiting until he's 40 to fight him again at a weight he's never fought at.
Well, at least it's a decent payday for GGG to retire on.
This isn't good for boxing, thoughComment
