Comments Thread For: Canelo On Divisional Rivals Needing To Face Each Other: It's Not Really That I Wish - I Really Don't Care

SAN DIEGO - The message sent in recent days to all of the fighters waiting for a shot at Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has been to face each other, and for the sport's pound-for-pound king to eventually face the winner.

Do you think that fans don't want to see him fight Bivol and Golovkin? As they say, the proof is in the pudding. If you are right, then then "fans" will stay away from these fights in droves. We should expect loads of empty seats in the area, and the PPV number should be in the toilet. I think what you really mean is Canelo should fight opponents YOU want to see.

He doesn't care because he will continue to duck them. He's hoping right now that Benavidez, andrade and Charlo lose their next fights

These fights are really good but I think there are other choices as well that more fans may prefer given they don’t know Bivol and ggg is 40.

The problem is most people who say that only mean a very small specific pool of boxing fans, usually American PBC fans.

He could stage a world wide poll and fight the winner I guess but the PBC guys might never get a look in as they're unknown outside the States,.

Personally, I have no problem with him fighting anyone he likes and if he needs to take a fight off and fight a soft touch say a Charlo in the future I'm not complaining.

Interesting that some call Bivol a soft/easy fight. Says alot about the poster's true goal. Anyways, so
Benavidez, Charlo, GGG would walk through Bivol?!

Fury is talking retirement, but Canelo would definitely could walk away with pride after this one..win or loose. Maybe one last fight against GGG if he wins (the hate is real between these two).

You might be right about Bivol not being well known, but the reality is that relatively few people in this country know Andrade, Charlo, and Benavidez either. Keep in mind that boxing is a niche sport in this country. The DAZN platform is available in over 200 countries and many of these folks are just as likely to know Bivol and GGG as Charlo and the like, particularly in Europe. It is really Canelo that drives the numbers. He set a U.S. indoor attendance record and in Mexico alone, over 15 million people watch his fights on Mexican TV irrespective of whom he fights. By way of comparison, Mexico has 1/3 of the U.S. population and I can't think of any American boxer who can attract 15 million tv viewers in this country.

The reality is that Canelo cannot fight all the wannabes on the same night. In the meantime, boxing fans are deprived of good fights while these guys avoid fighting each other and each puts social media pressure on Canelo to pick ME. When Canelo picks one, then the rest complain, and so on. In a way, from a broader boxing perspective, it might be better for Canelo to lose in order to break up this log jam. This strategy of perfectly competent boxers simply picking uber drivers as their next opponent until they get a fight with Canelo is destructive to the sport. I think before too long at least in this country people will move on and no one will give a damn about boxing.
