  • Rankings in Different Organizations Question

    I realize that the answer is probably money, deceit. political pull, etc., but is there another answer? Or at least do they claim there is an answer. In boxing, why are some boxers ranked in one Organization and not in another. For example, one could be ranked in the WBA but not the WBO OR one could be ranked in the WBO and WBA but not the IBF and so on and so on. Any idea why some boxers are not ranked in an organization when ranked in others? Thanks!!

      A fighter has to declare their intentions to pursue a certain body's title and then proceed along their set path. Some fighters try to be ranked in all four so they can take whatever title shot becomes available, but that comes along with more obligations (more sanctioning fees, more drug testing, different weigh in requirements, more mandatory fights, etc). Other fighters, usually the ones with a good relationship with a promoter, will focus on one. It's an open secret that the WBO does favors for Bob Arum and Frank Warren, the WBA does favors for Al Haymon and Don King, the WBC does whatever they think will make Canelo like them, and the IBF does whatever they can to derail big fights.

        So what these other guys say about promoters buying ranks is true, they do.

        What is also true is each of these bodies have regional bodies under them with regional champions. This can be complicated.

        For example, The WBC has the EBU for europe. The champion of Europe is the EBU champion. Being the EBU champion gets you a slot in the WBC top ten.

        WBA, IBF, and WBO also has under or regional belts/bodies that once won automatically position the champion on the world ranking system.

        In its purest form boxing is meant to have local champion on regional ratings, regional champion on world ratings, and world champions above ratings. So if you look at the WBC and WBA ratings for HW:

        HEAVY – World Boxing Council (wbcboxing.com)

        World Boxing Association Ranking – World Boxing Association (wbaboxing.com)

        WBC:

        TYSON FURY

        Country: United Kingdom

        Record: W 31 (22 KO) – L 0 – D 1

        Birth Date: 12/08/1988

        Pro Debut: 06/12/2008

        Won Title: February 22, 2020

        Last Defense: October 9, 2021

        Social Media Accounts:

        INTERIM CHAMPION:

        DILLIAN WHYTE

        SILVER: Joe Joyce (GB) / INTERNATIONAL: Vacant
        RATING

        PESO COMPLETO +90.719 KG / +200 LB
        Deontay Wilder US
        Joe Joyce GB SILVER/BBBofC/COMM
        Joseph Parker New Zealand
        Frank Sanchez Cuba CONTINENTAL AMERICAS
        Andy Ruiz Jr. Mexico/US
        Luis Ortiz Cuba
        Agit Kabayel Germany
        Filip Hrgovic Croatia
        Arslanbek Makhmudov Russia/Canada NABF
        Michael Hunter US
        See the NABF, Continental, BBBofC? Everyone of them are regional champions. Those guys have to ranked in the top ten by the world rating body.

        NABF=North American Boxing Federation

        Continental and Continental Americas are pretty on the nose

        BBBofC=British Boxing Board of Control

        COMM= Commonwealth

        Silver is actually a world title, a second place world title.

        WBA:
        WBA SUPER CHAMPION OLEKSANDR USYK UKR
        WBO-IBF CHAMPION
        WBA WORLD CHAMPION TREVOR BRYAN USA
        Won Title 01-30-21
        WBC TYSON FURY
        1 DANIEL DUBOIS OC GBR
        2 MICHAEL HUNTER C/A USA
        3 ROBERT HELENIUS GOLD FIN
        4 HUGHIE FURY GBR
        5 ANTHONY JOSHUA GBR
        6 DEONTAY WILDER USA
        7 AGIT KABAYEL CON GER
        8 NOT RATED #nowar
        9 ZHAN KOSSOBUTSKIY KAZ
        OC=Official Challenger...mandatory.

        Gold, C/A and Con are the lesser, or regional, belts that get those guys automatically rated on the WBA

        Gold is actually a world title under the real champion, like a second place world champion. Well, in this case Gold is actually third man in line.

        C/A Is Continental Americas

        Con is Continental

        #nowar is new and I'm about to make a thread on it.

          Fighters can have affiliated regional titles, or simply haven’t fought a ranked fighter from that particular sanctioning body

          Promoters often attend conventions and lobby the sanctions bodies for rankings where they can

            I believe C/A is continental Americas, another regional body for the WBA
