Comments Thread For: Vergil Ortiz Open To Fighting Ryan Garcia; De La Hoya Says 'They're Going To Meet'

LOS ANGELES - Two of boxing's brightest stars in Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Ryan Garcia are both signed to Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. If you leave it up to the principals involved in making a potential fight between the upstarts, the pair of 23-year-old fast-rising contenders would meet for a fight sometime in the not-too-distant future.

If Garcia is genuinely willing to fight Ortiz Jr, then his suicidal tendencies haven't really disappeared.

Could be interesting? I think Vergil vs. Teofimo might be more realistic!

Top Rank’s Plans To Bring Teofimo Lopez Back At 140 After He’s Medically Cleared
      December 10, 2021

Arum believes that the stress of Teofimo draining down to fight at 135 made his asthma problem worse, resulting in him being dehydrated and having the throat issue.

What Arum might not realise is that 140 pounds might not be enough for Teofimo to avoid continuing to have problems with his dehydration related problems. A rehydrated Teofimo weighs near 160 lbs, and that’s STILL a lot of weight to take off during fight week to get down to 140.

Losing 20 lbs of water weight isn’t a walk in the park for anyone, particularly someone with an asthma problem like Teofimo. You hate to say it but Teofimo may need to move up to 147 for him to avoid having problems in the future, and maybe even 154.

Bob Arum reveals that he has a number of 140-pounders in his Top Rank stable to choose from to match against former undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo

Way too early for that in thier careers man. Let them establish themselves in thier respective careers/divisions instead of forcing a matchup that has no business being made this early. Garcia has the frame to easily fight at 47 but this is a matchup that can be built into huge fight 5-7yrs from now if both can continue to dominate.

5-7 yes is way too long. They should try to go for titles and meet in 2-3 yrs in a catch weight or Ryan move up to make a statement

That's quite a surprise. Ryan certainly has the height and frame to make welterweight.

He's still a very young guy and I don't think he'd do that well against the top welterweights now. There's Davis and Haney at his weight that he should fight.

What “statement” will Ryan make at 140 or 147 when he has not made any statements at 135???
