Marquez is a pure puncher and has outstanding counter punching. Here is how I see these categories: The situation you address above is a reason why someone can't simply be a "counter punching" specialist... you cannot win fights with this skill alone. As a matter of fact, it becomes a weakness when a skill like counter punching is such a fundamental part of a fighter's "winning" strategy.

Two examples: James Toney against Roy Jones. Jones was too fast, no one was countering Jones... Toney was dependent on using the shoulder roll to set up counters and it cost him dearly. You can't time a fighter as fast and unorthodox as Jones... another example: the Marquez Floyd fight. Marquez was too small to counter Floyd in any meaningful way. Floyd could time Marquez all day, and being bigger and stronger Marquez could not hurt Floyd on a counter shot.

I consider Fury to be more of an out-boxer than boxer puncher.

Inoue would be another boxer-puncher that’s a top 10 fighter.

Yeah, it's always the boxer-punchers or pure boxers that dominate boxing. The tough guys usually don't last long in the sport. Gotta be a thinker in there for sure
