Comments Thread For: John Ryder Gets The Bounce This Time: Weekend Afterthoughts

One of the sayings that comes up often in other sports is that, sometimes, the ball bounces your way. In boxing, the variation would probably be that sometimes the cards bounce your way. In November 2019, John Ryder gave then-WBA and Ring magazine super middleweight titlist Callum Smith hell. Many thought Ryder did enough to win. All three judges disagreed. The cards bounced to Smith.

    Thanks, Cliff

"that match is just all sorts of violent on paper" - excellent preview

The bounce was due for Ryder. The split with fielding the weirdly lopsided cards against smith. Happy for him glad he's gotten a fair shake from the sport.

Jacob's nor Ryder want any Morrell or Benavidez problems. Either fight ends badly for both guys!

getting rewarded a fight he clearly didn't win isn't really a fair shake.

I don't see it as a right being wronged just two wrongs.

Ryder needs to fight David Morrell and soon, he is getting up there in age.

totally agree about the 2 wrongs - how about boxing just makes a concerted effort to punish useless judging so that with the passage of time we are talking about how rare a bad scorecard is, not like the bad 'ole days of the early 2020s

Jacobs esp - he couldn't even dissuade light-hitting Ryder from pressing him the whole fight - not sure he hurt Ryder once. Ryderwould be tko'd by both

Yeah Danny boy is done. His legacy will always be what could have been. He doesnt have the fire he once had IMO and Ryder hits like Clarissa Shields and that wont bode well against a heavy handed aggressive fighter like Morrell or Benavidez

While Jacobs does appear washed up that doesn’t justify screwing him over in a fight he obviously won.

Good wrap up Cliff. While I thought Jacobs should have won, his risk averse style of fighting lends itself to wonky judging.

Sure he can dictate the pace of a fight, but his unwillingness to throw meaningful punches or step on the gas came back to haunt him when he went to his opponents back yard. He didn't deserve that outcome but he didn't so himself any favors either.

Felix Cash is fast approaching his ceiling. Either he has no chin or his punch resistance is compromised from weight cuts. Either way I don't see him doing much more than euro-level champion.
