Comments Thread For: Ryan Garcia Split From Team Canelo Because He Wanted Independence, Own Gym & To Build Better Brand

Ryan Garcia surprised the boxing world Friday night when he released a statement announcing that he was ending his 3 1/2 year, undefeated five-fight run training under the au****es of Eddy Reynoso and alongside Canelo Alvarez. Instead, he opted to remain based nearby in San Diego and to train with respected coach Joe Goossen.

It’s brand > boxing and fame > fighting with this kid. That tells me this story isn’t going to end well.

Training and learning from Canelo and Reynoso would have been invaluable.

Sounds like Ryan's dad wanted to say " Garcia doesn't wanna live in Canelos shadow ".

I really try to give him the benefit of the doubt but Ryan sounds unbearable. He wants to build his "brand" better? That's one of the reasons? How about becoming a better fighter? Ryan wanted his own gym because he didn't like having his training schedule dictated to him? Terrible.

I can imagine Goossen texting Ryan asking what time he wants to train that day. Ryan texting 11ish and then saying he just wants to work the speed bag for a little bit while someone records it for his feed.

There just doesn't seem to be substance there. He seems to want to play the part of a fighter but not actually be a fighter and make the sacrifices necessary. Whatever.

Every boxer in the new generation wants to be the one Canelo passes the baton to. Garcia had an extremely rare opportunity but is obviously too short sighted to see it.

I know it's too early to know who would become the new face of boxing when Canelo exits but I'm hoping for either Tank or Virgil. I feel like Spence will be too old when Canelo retires.

                What a huge mistake.

Having Canelo in your camp/team is a huge advantage for a young fighter.

yeah course he wants his own gym, you really think reynoso is going to be happy with him filming his youtube clips, inviting the paul brothers round etc? maybe garcia can get his new gym designed so it has better lighting, some professional camera rigs etc. fair play he is making a lot of money but i said for years that his number 1 passion is social media and not boxing, boxing was a way to get his name out there and get some more followers on instagram. some fighters look up to muhammed ali, ray leonard etc well ryan garcia looks up to ksi, joe weller, jake paul, hell he even started to get tattoos like his hero jake paul lol
