this stemmed from an agreement after the fall of the USSR that NATO doesn’t expand East. Well, now NATO is moving to Ukraine, and Russia says they can’t do that based on an agreement from 30 years ago, but NATO says there is no such thing in place.

Also, NATO borrowed russian military, flags and polititians to occupy Crimea State and solid part of the Eastern Ukraine while "moving to Ukraine". What a clever SOBes that NATO is! No wonder russia is so angry now for the damaged image of this saint country.

I knew this thread would unleash the political science embedded in every combat sport forum; the good, the bad and the ugly. The issues associated with the current rosiisko-ukrainska viina are complex, obviously. For starters, contermporary aspirations aside, this has been a hotspot for a very long time, tied to Crimea (or the Tauric Peninsula), in the crosshairs of a dozen or more empires including the Greek, Persian, Roman and Byzantine. Because detente is better than armed conflict as measued in net gain, let's all hope it gets resolved peaceably, rather than serving as the death rattle of the entire West and the almost invariable slide into complete global human subjugation that would become the result of that.

It's both depends on if you're using the Russian pronunciation or the Ukrainian pronunciation. That's like saying Russia/Rusia or Ukraine/Ucrania. I understand the conflict and of course the Ukraine would prefer Kyiv as they are trying to be more independent, but they were a part of the Soviet Union for a long time and do speak Russian in terms of business so I'm sure the Russian speaking Ukrainians pronounce it Kiev still right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think possibly transliteration is the word you're looking for, but I could be wrong. I think the place names - and indeed people's names - are pronounced roughly the same in both countries but in recent years various countries in the former Soviet sphere have chosen to start transliterating in different ways, partly a show of national independence... I think.

Sergey Khomitsky for instance - a belorussian - became Siarhei Khamitski even though the pronoucination of his name stayed exactly the same.
