people want to say that this money stuff doesnt matter to the fans and that theyre experts and all that but it does effect boxing in the end for us.

DAZN forked out a ton to buy GGG and Canelo to get a 3rd fight out of them that never happened. That has effects down stream.

HBO pulled out completely and they had the best production bar none, the new stuff isnt even close. Showtime is pretty nearly done with boxing too. They didnt want to deal with the money and risk and stuff.

I think 40million for this fight is very high risk even if they end up making money. Other promoters see that and say *** that I dont want to take that risk and pull out of boxing. broadcasters pull out, they see things like DAZN waste so much money.

Now you got low rate crap like thrilla having fights and when Showtime finally has a match its jake paul crap

The fight won’t sell well in the usa, the majority of its revenue will have to be made in the U.K. Even Hearn hinted that has he gotten the rights on dayzin that it may be PPV even on the app. Fury sells well in the usa when he has a dangerous dance partner like wilder because they produce so much drama together in and out of the ring. I wonder how much the pov will be in the U.K….£30 isn’t going to get them their investment back.
in any event, I agree, this large purse bid no matter who won it isn’t good. It’s overpricing a fight that isn’t that popular but that’s what the network wars have done…..driven up the price for boxing. And that has to do with fighter greed and entitlement

X factor is US baseball lock out. If season is delayed, there’s gonna be a lack of sports. With vigorous promotion, and less competition, you get sports media talking it up more. Even for an overseas fight. It’s still the real HW championship. Also - watch Fury do another high profile WWE type thing.

Here goes a link of a random heavyweight fight, in 2010. Purse bid was 8 million. You got a champ who sells well, wlad roughly comparable to fury, more or less. Then you got the other guy who is like a top 5 or top 10 heavyweight. Sam peter got 2 million and was happy with it.

Now the purse ballooned up 5 times. The underdog is getting 4x and the champ/star getting 5.3 times more.

In just 12 years when boxing is arguably less popular than it used to be the prizes are 4-5 times more? this is why HBO/showtime are out of the game, they rather just make shows that most of the population will watch, maybe they will land the next game of thrones, its less risk than boxing.

It looks high, very high, but (1) people have been locked-down for 2 years, there is a lot of pent-up consumption out there
(2) Whyte isn't a quiet guy, he will go out & sell the fight just as much as Tyson will
(3) There aren't many sports that cross continents, boxing does. You can sell this one in China, India, Africa, N & S America, everywhere
(4) This isn't tennis, it isn't snooker, those guys will be putting their lives on the line. I can see Fury v Whyte being VERY nasty & bloody indeed!

There are some factors at play that make the money on display not all that crazy.

First, as many have noted, an outsized part of the revenues for this fight will be UK driven. Boxing has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in the UK in the last decade. So although you make a fair point in saying boxing is less popular than it used to be in general, this isn't true in the UK in comparison to your sample year of 2010.

Second, streaming means the model of how money is generated is different. There is more competition to get these big name fighters on a certain network/platform, as it's become more of a global playing field. The likes of DAZN and Triller have come in with big bucks and not only is there more money flowing in, but the fighters are commanding larger chunks of the revenue.

Third, inflation in general. Central banks flooded the system with money during the financial crises and, never having removed it, have done it again during the covid pandemic. People have ended up with disposable income to burn and prices are jumping across all sectors.

Fourth, fighters fight less frequently, decreasing the supply of high quality fights and testing the elasticity of demand. More fights are being sold on PPV than ever before -- and the demand appears to be there to pay for it.

I'm not sure it is all sustainable, but I don't think the promoters will lose money on this fight.

Is it really that big of a fight in the UK? Honest question because I was under the impression Fury wasn't liked and supported by the masses there?

As for here in the States,if its on ppv here, it will not sell for shiet,especially it being live around what noon? Those "epic" showdowns with Wilder did nothing for his popularity here and cant see many of us sitting home around noon to purchase a Fury ppv.Bob is better off putting in on ESPN here stateside.

Foreman won his championship after losing to Tommy Morrison without even winning again and got a gift title fight if he hadn’t done that he was a circus act in boxing getting lucky wins and fighting the weakest opponents you guys just hate on here and then cry when anyone posts real stuff on here .

Not always from the get go, Froch vs Groves 1 only sold 47k and much like Fury vs Whyte was seen by many as a pointless mismatch.

It was only after a fight of the year contender that had a controversial ending was the rematch a huge fight.
