If he does slug it out with Cotto, with his hand speed he'll land his share of shots, but moving in and out with better handspeed and footwork would be his best bet.

Except Pac isn't a boxer, he is a very offensive fighter who doesn't circle what so ever, he's in an in-n-out pressure fighter. Also, Manny doesn't throw left hooks, he throws straight left hands. If he did throw a left hook as his best weapon, I would never give him the edge in this fight. Cotto has no problems with hooks, he's got superb defense against those. Cotto is in danger because he is open to shots up the middle and uppercuts. I don't know if you are just mistaken but you're wrong on how Paq fights. As for him needing to circle...

I'm really not sure where people get this notion that Cotto is so easy a fighter. We all take into account that Paq has beaten "bigger" guys in Hatton and DLH, and he's put on a dominating performance for both. But neither guy was in his prime, and in DLH case he was the taller fighter but he certainly wasn't the bigger fighter. Also, while Hatton is a pressure fighter he just rushes in there and DLH never was a pressure fighter, even Roach stated during camp he kept trying to get DLH to cut off the ring but all he did was follow. Cotto does neither of these things, he cuts off the ring very well as he proved against Malignaggi and he doesn't rush in there as he showed in the Mosley fight. Cotto is a puncher, but he knows how to set up his shots up with his boxing ability.

The fact is Manny stands no chance at winning if he doesn't do what made him so successful this far in his career. He needs to bounce in and and out and create angles, but his main problem is everything he does ends up running right into Cotto's left. When Manny throws his left, he's completely exposed as he drops his right hand, but adding to that he leans to his opponents left and I see that being nothing but trouble. He might get away with it for a while till Cotto gets the timing down, (IF Cotto gets the timing down.) Add to that when Manny creates his angles after the left, he continues his momentum and turn his opponent, but again it revolves around going to his right, the opponents left. I see this as being nothing but trouble given Cotto is a converted southpaw, if Cotto was a naturally righty, I'd put my money on Paq, given the scenario and styles of these fighters, I gotta go with Cotto.

he needs to trade/slug it out at some point to test the waters.

I guess his wins over Hatton and De La Hoya really got to Pacquiao head. If Pacquiao even tries to slug it out, Cotto will KO him before the 6th round.
If Pacquiao goes to war with Cotto he is going to lose.
