  • Comments Thread For: Magsayo's Promoter: Gary Russell Absolutely Deserves A Rematch; He Fought Gallantly

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey - Mark Magsayo doesn't have a contractual obligation to grant Gary Russell Jr. a rematch. Though free to fight any contender ranked within the top 15 by the WBC in his first title defense, even Magsayo's promoter admitted that Russell deserves a second shot at the newly crowned champion. Sean Gibbons, the president of Manny Pacquiao Promotions, told BoxingScene.com following Magsayo's upset of Russell that the undefeated Filipino champion should box Russell again.

Salute to Sean Gibbons, and Freddie Roach! Very Classy! How did Masagayo become the mandatory over Rey Vargas?

Gary Russell-Rey Vargas Agree To Terms For Featherweight Title Fight, Per WBC
    March 8, 2021

Gary Russell Jr. is set for his annual title defense.

The longest active-reigning male titlist in the sport today is set to next face Rey Vargas (34-0, 22KOs), with the two sides avoiding a purse bid hearing for their ordered WBC featherweight title fight. News of the matchup being finalized was revealed by the WBC, though the fight currently remains without a date or location.

The bout was first ordered on Jan. 15th, shortly after Vargas (34-0, 22KOs) officially moved up in weight after having reigned as the WBC junior featherweight champion since 2017. Vargas was previously named “Champion in Recess” at his old weight after having sat out for all of 2020, in part due to the pandemic but also after suffering a broken leg towards mid-year.

The Pinoys don't want a rematch. They see this as the second coming of Pacquiao and that Gary was just beat by a better boxer, bad arm be damned.

Gibbons can say he wants to, but they REALLY don't want to give GRJ a rematch lol. And honestly it make sense. Why not gun for a LSC fight? Good money, fan friendly and Magsayo may be able to beat him at this point of his career. That's what needs to happen next.

He damn near beat Mark with 1 arm. So yes he deserves a rematch. But I dont blame Mark for making a lil money before a rematch because I doubt hes a Champion long.

On a side note, of the 2 fights Ive watched of Magyso, he literally checks out mid rounds. At this level you have to win rds. You cant ko everyone.

              Gary Russell deserves a rematch.

But how long is he going to take to heal? And is he finally going to get surgery for that issue, which will put him out for even longer?

Gibbons is advised by Haymon. He doesn't have power to make fights. It's silly to think otherwise. Gibbons doesn't own PBC or Showtime, Fox. It is not up to him. MP fighters are essentially PBC fighters.

Gibbons is going to try and duck the rematch for as long as possible like he did with Salido avoiding Lomachenko.
